I can pick up a used ultra carry II from a friend for $500 , it is ex condition and has
probably had 500 rounds put thru it. Now on the same token I can pick up a brand new Glock 30 for the same price. What would you buy? I should mention I already have a Glock and 2 Kimbers, but I am gonna buy one or the other regardless. Opinions?

That's a tough one

I had an ultra carry and traded it. FTF, FTE that I couldn't get resolved. It could have been me and it could have been the pistol. Regardless, I have some doubt about reliability of the really short 1911.

But the UC is such a nice pistol, Bushingless bull barrel, really nice fit. I guess I would go with the UC if it were stainless and the glock otherwise.

If you want an Ultra Carry at all, buy this one. You can easily find Glocks for $500. If you pass this deal up you will probably end up kicking yourself when you pay $650-750 for an Ultra Carry down the road. As long as you can verify this one is in good shape, that's the choice I'd make.

For what its worth, Most folks that complain about failures in Kimber Series II products have "Ultra" models. The 3" 1911 just seems to have inherent problems. Its probably why there aren't too many gunmakers crankin' out 3" 1911's.
If your friend don't mind, take his Kimber to the range and put a couple hundred rounds through it. If possible, try to use the round you intend to carry. 230gr. ball might shoot without a hitch but JHP's or lighter rounds might cause a problem. Put it through its paces. If all goes well, buy the Kimber.

Or the Glock.

No. Wait! Get the Kimber.

but you might want the Glock.

:banghead:

Totally different animals. I would take the UC. Once reliability is confirmed or corrected, there will be no comparison on trigger and accuracy. At that price you can pay a smith for a reliability job if needed and still come out good. The UC will win hands down. Would have been better if it were a Series 1 (like mine :). Get a Glock later if you still want it. You will always be able to find a Glock deal.

The ultra is a black oxide, I put a box of UMC 230gr. from wally world thru it without a hicup. Yeah, I guess I can pick up another Glock later. I have 2 other ultra carrys though.

Thats a little detail you failed to mention. What are you gouing to do with 3 UCs? Get the Glock or something else interesting.

I'd go with the Glock, but my opinion is biased because I have a bunch of them and love Glocks!

I've been tempted to buy a Kimber Ultra CDP. What a beautiful gun, but it bugs me that my thumb can't reach the slide release. I don't have that problem with any Glock, and it's a common complaint with Kimbers.

2 cents.

I'd take the G30 (or a G36) if you were going to use it as a CCW; I have nothing against Kimbers in general, but I'd prefer one in gov't length (full-size).

GILROY I mentioned I had 2 Kimbers in my initial post,.. they are just so damn sexy though I gots too have one more.

More capacity, less weight, no harder to conceal, with an almost care-free finish and easier to maintain/modify to individual tastes... it's the Glock 30, hands down.

I would buy the Kimber.

I own both style pistols and I love them both, although I am partial to the 1911's.

However, this is merely a common sense decision and has nothing to do with which pistol you want or like.

The Kimber is worth more, even used. Spend the $500 on the Kimber, and if you don't really want it, sell it......make a few bucks and still buy the brand new Glock. Either way you come out smelling like a rose.

Or, take the Kimber to a dealer and trade it in on the new Glock plus an accessory or two, or ammo.

It's a business decision, that's all. Like I said.....I own both styles, carry both, love both...........but buying the Kimber and then making a final decision is what I'd do.

I have both, but for the price of the Kimber its a deal.
*Note- check out the ramp to see if its chewed up- thats the only issue I have w/ the Ultralites- the stock mags and CM's tend to chew up the ramp and sometimes cause feeding issues. but its still a good deal even if it is the case/ then get wilson mags . * Note this isn't mine- I don't have a camera that takes close-ups for detail pics. But mine only had 1 gouge, caught it quick and switched to the wilson mags.

Sort of like asking whether you should buy a pickup truck or a sedan.

I've shot a few Glocks, handled more, looked at even more, but never could warm up to them. Durable, accurate, dependable, but--to my eye, anyway--ugly.

As for the Ultra Carry, do a search for posts by 1911Tuner regarding the 3" barrel 1911's. Very good price, though.

I just noticed it has an internal extractor and is different then my other ultra carry lls. My other ones have the external ones. This must be a very early ultra carry ll.
