I'm in the market for a new pistol it will be the first I personally buy, not a gift or long term loan. I can't decide Between a Glock 17 and Springfield XD9. I'm not interested in any of the other options like CZ or Beretta. I'm my needs are semi light weight(under 30oz), durable, accurate, full size, light and holster compatibility(preferred is Blackhawk Serpa), customization. I will be using for USPSA, carry in the woods while hunting, Non CCW self defense. Cost is a big factor! The lowest prices ive seen are: Glock 17 $499 and SA XDM9 $555. (I dont care for the XD gear execpt the mags and case)

I'm sure you would do fine with either weapon, but I prefer Glocks. I've never fired a XD, only handled a few at the fun stores. I prefer how Glocks feel better, but if I had fired, and handled XD's B/F I did with Glock that might be reversed. A Glock feels very natural to me, and I feel they have great ergonomics and point very well, and I don't see why many have a problem with their grip angle, but I'm normally not very picky with how most modern handguns feel as I can handle and fire most any of them, and get quickly accustom to how they feel, and find most of them to be comfortable guns in my hand.

I'm very fond of the M&P's feel probably more than any other poly gun I've handled. One of these days I'm going to get an M&P I think.

Your asking the wrong people. Ask your hand. Go to the gun store and fondle an XD, a Glock, and a M&P. Clear the weapon and find something to point at, then point the gun, then look down the sights to see what you are aiming at. If the glock is aiming high and off to one side or the other, then go with the XD. Give the M&P a chance too, they are good guns, so is an FNP.

I refuse to vote because you don't have "both" as an option.

Since cost is a big factor, might want to skip the XDM and go with an XD (if you don't go Glock).
Got a few XDs myself-never cared much for the M-seems to be more marketing than ?
I also hear there is, but have never seen, an XD essentials package-gun only, sans the not quite ready for primetime accessories.

Currently own both, and in my opinion Glock. It really does boil down to personal preference though. You can't go wrong either way. Have fun choosing bud.

I prefer and voted for the XDM, but honestly , you can't go wrong with either pistol. i base my preference on the grip angles. I own an XDM 45. I've had extensive range time with the Glock 22,23 and 19 and aside from the grip angles , I can't complain about any of them . buy whichever one feels better to you .

I own an XDm9 and absolutely love it. Have shot thousands of rounds through it and not a single failure or hickup. I seem to shoot it very, very well also, even compared to my 1911's and other guns. I know many folks love their glocks and they are just as reliable so I don't think you can go wrong.

I trust my life to a XD40 but this comes down to what feels better in your hand, not mine.

Go with your gut. Ya feelin XD jump on it, ditto Glock. For what its worth, Glock mags, holsters, etc. seem to be easier to find. At least in this area of the world.

I will echo what most have said. The main difference is going to be how it feels to you. Some Glock and XD guys will steer everyone they can away from the other, but both are great pistols. I happen to prefer the XDm because of the way it feels in my hand. My XDm is also much more accurate than my old XD was. Maybe it's just marketing and I've gotten a lot better over the years, or maybe that "M" actually does give you a better pistol. A trigger job and better sights and you'll be shooting your XDm like a 1911 in no time.

Is the "M" really that much better than the standard? I've seen a XD9 Service for about $150 less than a XDM. Also, is the 4" barrel suficient for comp? I like the 5" tactical but it runs about $30 more than a 4" service. I dont plan on making a career shooting comp but rather just something fun on the weekends here and there.

It really depends who you ask. In my opinion, yes, the XDm is that much better. Higher ammo capacity, better grips, better barrel, better looks, etc. The trigger and sights will likely be replaced on either for a competition gun.

Is it going to be that much better for you? Only you can answer that. You'll hear different things from different people based on their experiences, but the better part of the time they will be touting whatever they own as the greatest. I own both and if I can only have one, it will be the XDm every time.

Unless you have some pressing need for something the M offers for competition use (don't really know what that would be), or just have to have the replaceable backstraps (I don't), I don't think so.

I own a couple of XD Subcompacts (9 & 40), and checked out the M line when they came out, but so far I'm unimpressed. 'Course, I'm a pragmatist, and my primary use is for SD.

Pretty much forgot what little I knew about 'em when researching 'em as I quickly decided I wasn't interested, but if I remember I told a few folks if you were looking for a HD gun with max capacity and don't worry too much 'bout size, the 9mm ain't a bad choice-I seem to remember the 9mm XDM holds more rounds than the XD?

A couple of things I didn't like 'bout the M line:
Match Grade Barrel-considering how accurate mine are (and they're subcompacts), I can't see the match grade barrel offering any benefit.
Take different magazines than the regular XD line.
Looks (subjective), but I like the regular XD better.
Novak or ? rear sight-for a SD type gun, I prefer the older XD style sights-the flat front of the rear sight blade lends itselft to one-handed operation.
Don't recall if the rear site on the M is adjustable, but for a SD gun I prefer drift adjustable sights.

The XD 45 Compact has been on my want list for way too long!

My personal preference would be the XDm, though I admit the Glock is a fine firearm. I like the grip angle of the XD/XDm much better than Glocks. I have shot a lot of Glocks and find the XDm's easier to shoot well.

I had to carry a Glock for years. (Dept. Issue.) But for my own use, i like the XD40 service full size w/ night sights, for my CCW needs. For some reason i just like the feel of the XD better in my big old hands. I also shoot it better. I carry my XD every day ccw w/IWB holster, most of the time i forget i have it on.
My next choice would be my old Gov. issue Colt 1911 that was issued to my Dad in 1941.

Until Springfield supports the 9mm XDm it will not be certified by anyone.

The magazine spring of the 9mm XDm is unique to that model only. Not the XDm40, not any other XD or XDm model.

Springfield does not offer it. Where I learned to fight, that is non-support.

Go figure.
