Glocks...Should I buy into the ugliness??

Might as well try it.

I don't find Glocks that ugly. There are plenty of uglier guns out there these days.

I avoided Glocks for quite a while, but in Nov 2008 I first shot one. By the end of the month I owned my first Glock, a G34. Shot my first USPSA match with it in April 09, I am now an a "C" class shooter in Production class. They really do work well aiming and firing fast, for me better than most of its competition. Magazines and accessories are plentiful and cheap compared to the others. My only complaint are the factory sights, but they are very easy to change. Dawson Precision fiber optic adjustable sights on the G34 and Trijicon tritium night sights on th G17.

I get it....you can throw these things in the mud, pick them up, and it's like nothing ever happened. I respect that, and I wish that some of the more appealing brands had that stereotype. Still they look like a 2x4, and the grip looks like captain hooks flintlock. Still it seems that nobodies collection is complete without one.

Have been pondering this question for a while. They are tempting, but I am on the fence.

The question you should be asking yourself is whether or not there's an alternative to the Glock that has the features (ergonomics, reliability, accuracy) that you like but also appeals to you aesthetically. If not, then you should probably buy a Glock. Pretty simple really.

As for the "Glocks always goes bang" mantra ... I've seen a number of Glocks (and other pistols) experience failures of one kind or another. If you shoot enough in any kind of stressful format, you will see failures regardless of the manufacturer.

Yeah I really like my full size M&P 9 but it is just a tad too big for me to carry. So my G19 wins for carry. I shoot them both well, and the M&P fits my hand really well and I do find it more aesthetically pleasing. As a defensive tool the Glock is awesome, just not gonna win any beauty contests.

Glocks have a featureless, no nonsense, get the job done appearance - kinda like a ballistic missile submarine.

Take a small paper bag and place it over.... well, you know the joke.

There are many reasons to chose a firearm. If the choice is strictly functional then what does the looks matter?

If you want a functional and pretty gun, then I think you have already stated the Glock is ugly to you, so therefore no Glock for you!

What would you suggest 1858?

As others have suggested, if you want a polymer frame and don't care for the looks of the Glock, maybe a Springfield XDM or S&W M&P. I've shot both and liked them ... not enough to buy one yet, but I don't own a Glock either and I've shot a bunch of those too.

Whatever I buy, it will be my first polymer. My whole collection consist of firearms/clubs. So buying a polymer is a whole new element. Glocks seem like the obvious choice, but that why I started this thread.

Meh, that never bothered me with my XD. It was a fine weapon, I only sold it to finance my EMP.

Being able to rack the slide, one-handed, while in a wounded and weakened condition that may compromise the ability to grip the pistol is an important consideration for many LEOs.

I came across one of those ugly Glock 20's at a gun show last weekend for $155.00. I could hardly believe it. The guy selling the gun thought it was a HighPoint...I just could'nt take advantage.

Ok...So it's Glock, XD, S&W, etc. in polymer......What's the most fun to shoot....I already have a couple of 9s and a 45acp...not really digging the thought of adding another caliber....Is the 40 really worth it??

I actually sold my XD40 partially because I wanted to worry about one less caliber, now I'm primarily shooting 9mm and .45ACP (and .380 now and then).

I like .40S&W, but no I don't think it's worth it if you don't want to have to deal with buying another caliber. Not a problem for some people, I just wanted to cut back.

As for what's the most "fun" to shoot... I've shot them all, couldn't tell ya. You'll have to go rent them and decide for yourself.

There is a Glock drill for slide racking using the rear sights on a belt that is being taught to NYPD recruits that came over from the FBI for injured defenses.

The grip safety on the XD can complicate the process and lead to failure/death.

I seem to be with you 2 wheels....I have a few expensive revolver calibers that I favor for range shooting. Have you noticed any reliability issues with the 45 as opposed to 9mm...Only reason I ask is that the 9s that I have have been flawless, the 45....not so much.
