I was in Chicago on a business trip "a long time ago" -- I think maybe in the '80s, right around the time Bernie Goetz did his thing in NY --- and the whole town was abuzz over a shooting tale. I heard it while taking a bus ride.
This old guy got off a city bus and was held up by a young black dude. He reached into his grocery bag, pulled out some kind of ancient huge hawg-leg and dumped a full cylinder into the BG. (Some say he re-loaded and did it again.) Then he sat down and waited for the cops.
When they asked him why, he explained that he got his social security check the same day every month and took it to the grocery store to stock up and get it cashed. This was the 3rd or 4th time the same man had been waiting for him to come home and relieve him of the whole lot, and he just couldn't take it any more.
Mayor Daly and the City DA were tied up in knots. They had a pure D No-questions-asked case of PRE-MEDITATED MURDER here, illegal possession, and lots and lots of other charges. They had them a hugely PUBLIC case on their hands. They had to set an EXAMPLE, right????
They also had a 76-year-0ld man they were holding in jail.
And a city/county/STATE full of people who were cheering.
As the bus driver said, "Where they going to find a jury that will convict him?"
All the above is more than 20-year-old memory of gossip I heard on a bus.
Does anybody on this forum know anything about that case?
