me and my brother are going out this weekend with nothing but at tent, canned beans and water maybe a 30 pack as well:D. it so happens this weekend lands on pre-rut firearms season for whitetail anterless and turkey season, also dove, duck, and squirrel. if i do shoot a deer we will quarter and take to town for the freezer, keeping enough for the weekend. this should be fun, can not wait. may be the best vacation i've had in 2 years! guns im taking are a 1914 remington model 11 in 12 gauge, winchester 94 in .45 colt and my ruger blackhawk in .45 colt. there is a creek and a small pond in a pasture that we will be staying at. I'll report on how this goes.

Nice! My uncle recently passed but was a B17 pilot in WWII. He used to take a float plane into Canada for a couple weeks each year with nothing but his fishing rod, some rifles and a few buddies. Not sure if I would survive but sure admire those that do. Good luck!

My youngest Son and I used to do hunts like that, quite often in fact. We would eat dove and quail, and an occasional a tasty cotton tail. I can't recall us not eating well. And often times we would fill at least one of our deer tags within the first or second day, then it was back straps on the Bar B, with a side of quail, yum. But now that I'm getting up there in the years, we do it bit differently, nice roomy tent, wood stove, generator, well, you get the idea. But I sure do cherish those moments of honest to goodness camping and packing in, where it was rare to see another human.

Hope you guys have a good time, but how could you not.

we will have fun, i am taking a horse in but my brother is driving in because we might get a deer and have to go to town to the freezer. I dunno if i want to shoot rabbit yet, they are in season but we have not had a good freeze and they taste really bad when they have been eating fresh greens. i shot 2 turkeys last weekend and had another tag but wanted to save it. (i had my chance). Wish i could take my dog ( German wirehair pointer) but he has some wicked allergies going on right now with hot spots. (expensive vet bill). been throwing around taking my re-curve out too, took it dove hunting 2 times with flu flus and snaros, minimum success. (4 birds out of 70ish shots) I think more people should do this, good to have peace of quiet and mind every once in awhile.

Let us know how this turns out. Remember to take salt. Anything cut into hotdog shaped pieces can be cooked on a stick so can small fish and crawdad tails. Make sure the sticks are green. Good Luck.

That just might be where the game wants to be morning & evening to drink.
And with you camped out on it?

Well, they will go somewhere else to get water!

And you will be eating the canned bean emergency rations.

Your rations are woefully lacking in a very important liquid component: whiskey & beer ...

:D

Not going to happen.

Tried this once and nearly starved. There are a lot of things that I can leave at home but food and water are not on the list. I don't care if I am only going for one day. There will be enough food in my backpack to feed a bus load of High schoolers.:D

Sounds like a good time. My GWP has had wicked allergies going on all of a sudden last month or so too. Licking his feet, itchy on his tummy, and yeast infection in his ear as well. Cant figure it out.

The reason domestic cats are such good hunters and so successful is that they almost never hunt hungry or out of desperation. Because of this, they are patient enough to wait till the perfect opportunity before attempting the kill. While I enjoy eating the fruits of my labor when hunting/fishing/camping, I'd take something other than a 30 pack of beer along with the beans.

well it went well. managed to get some game. did lots of walking for the game, nothing much came close to camp but some ducks. didnt shoot them though, did not want to go into the cold water. Managed to get a turkey the first morning, and some turtle dove that evening. had a chance at a deer but was not in season. it was deer season" special pre-rut firearms season" but bucks are not allowed and i walked into a small buck bedded down. was fun we will be doing it again for sure. I did not take a horse and i bet i walked 10 miles, and sat by game trails for most of the camping. i did take breaks from hunting to cut fire wood.

My experience...

Don't punish yourself.
Take some onions/garlic
Salt
Pepper
Bisquick
Gin/Juniper berries

It'll take less space than a couple Coke - er, beer cans.

Lots of water and peanuts. Peanuts like pistacchios make you smart. Back in the days they have beef jerky. It provides the protein and energy.

Glad it went well for you!
I once watched a group of individuals head out to the boundary waters with nothing but a few quick snacks. they intended to live off catching fish. It didn't go well for them. 3 days later they crossed our path again on their way out, they hadn't eaten since we saw them last.

A fishing pole is a pretty good survival tool. Even when you can't hunt, you can still fish.

That is my kind of trip, glad it turned out good. I like to bring some aluminum foil to cook game in the coals of a fire. Keeps it from getting dried out on the fire like on a spit and no need to carry a pot.

At my age I never go out without a small backpack, with a couple of granola bars, and at least 3 bottles of water. Not to mention my 4WD quad is fully packed to the brim, and as RC mentioned I never camp near a pond or source of water for wildlife.

couple of mountain house meals, some granola bars and a pint of rum! Take the .22 and a fishing pole.....if the wife is coming....a box of wine.

..and a water filter of course...
