Over the Memorial Day weekend, I took my nephew to a 3-day clinic at Appleseed's home range. We had a great time, and learned a bunch. My nephew used a standard 10/22 with Tech sights, and I used a bolt action CZ452 with aperture sights. We also brought an AR15 to shoot some. All our rifles were equipped with leather 1907 slings, but everyone else used a cotton GI sling. Shooting the AQT well is certainly do-able with a bolt rifle, but you can't let any grass grow trying to get off that perfect shot. ;)

The Appleseed people are a dedicated and knowledgeable bunch of folks, and the event is very family-friendly and very helpful. If you've ever thought of attending one of their events, I can highly recommend it!

Sounds like a good experience and a good way to spend the weekend! Did you make Rifleman with the CZ? Did your nephew?

Between the 1907 and the M-1 sling, I've always found the M-1 to be easier to use and adjust quickly, but run a 1907 because it feels less like a tourniquet on my support arm.

Appleseed seems like a great organization with a good reputation for the quality of their work. Sadly we don't have many of them nearby.

My only "complaint" about Appleseed is that they shoot on Sundays. Some of us try very hard to keep Sabbath ( I guess some would find Saturday Shooting in violation of the Sabbath). I have attended some scouting events that were set up to avoid Sundays, though this summer at camp we will have to just check in Monday rather than Sunday like "everyone else"

I sort of wonder if it might be worth while to try to set up a Friday/Saturday class or just a one day for those that keep Sabbath locally with the emphasis being Parent /child teams.

The first 3 AQTs I shot were flirting with the required score of 210 (201, 209, 205). I wasn't getting all my shots off in the required time on the sitting and prone stages, and each not shot counts as a miss. I eventually wised up, and figured ten "good enough" shots is better than 7 really good ones and 3 misses. I made Rifleman on the 4th, then, with a 228.

My nephew didn't quite make Rifleman, but came close by finishing up with his best 2 scores. He was improving all day, and I was proud of him. His marksmanship was good enough that they let him go to the 500 yard range with my AR15 to stretch his legs a bit. He really enjoyed that. :p

I'll be attending my first Appleseed towards the end of August with a buddy. Glad to hear that it was a positive experience for you. I'm looking forward to mine.:D
