Can't find this stuff in .38 anywhere. Where are you guys getting yours?

Bought 5 LE 50-round boxes (Speer #53921) from sellforless for $65 +$12 S&H.

I compared velocities of LE #53921 with civilian #23921 version which sells for $1+ round. Expected it to be same ammo but there was a difference. In my 442 #23921 clocked AVE 906 fps; SD 7; ES 21 (9 rounds). In the same session #53291 clocked 875 fps; SD 31; ES 95 (10 rounds). It wasn't just one outlier - velocities were evenly spread over 95 fps interval...

Are we getting what we paid for?

I bought a case myself in the 50 round box. I called Speer and talked to them. They said as long as you're buying the 135 grain Gold Dot Plus P 38's they are all the same. The "5" at the beginning of the part number just meant a 50 count box instead of a "2" for a 20 count box.

Well, the next logical question is who offers a comparable deal on .38 hardball, practice ammo as "sellforless" does on the Speer Gold Dots?

doc540:

Build your own, and get a "replica reload" for the GDSB 38+P factory round for about $6.00 / 50.

See this thread here.

Good point, Jim :)

Jeff, that's what I always thought, but... there is a difference. I know that many of us had chronographed these loads before. Would be interested to know how consistent velocities were.

I shot my first rounds out of the LEO / 50 round box last week--and it was as Mike reported: about 30 fps slower, with bigger ES/SDs. The group was bigger too, but that could have been me.

I was so surprised I shot it again. Same results. It was not enough to worry about at SD distances, but it sure surprised me. The various times I had bought the retail packs of 20 last year there was no inconsistency like this.

I still don't know what to make of this, really--but my opinion of Speer has sagged slightly.

Streichers is out of stock, as is everybody else. So I went ahead and ordered 250rds from the Gunbroker seller. Figure I'll share the ammo with friends and family.

Jim, glad you are confirming my observation. I've been wondering if it my be an equipment problem on my part, etc. Agree with you that this difference has no consequences for SD use.

Good call, .. Sellforless sells good ammo and most people (myself included) are happy. But she is not greatest communicator in the world. I didn't have any problems, but some people complained - check her feedback on gb.
