That is correct. It was definitely a .44. It could have been a Remington 1861 model, but the odds would be against it. It was almost certainly a Remington New Model Army, sometimes called the Model 1863 (from its introduction date) or the Model 1858 (from the patent date marked on the barrel). Over 120,000 were made it and it was the second most common revolver of the Civil War, production being exceeded only by the Colt 1860 Army, of which over 200,000 were made.
Most modern shooters consider the Remington superior to the Colt because it has a solid top strap. During the war, however, the Colt was preferred because fired caps could be shaken free, while they tended to jam the cylinder in the Remington.
