I decided to break down and buy my first 1911. My bud at the le supply will hook up whatever I want.

Kimber eclipse, or colt. I think. I want it to be pretty and accurate. I always shoot my friends at the range and they are easy to hit with.

Uses, travel, target, home defense. Under a grand at My discount. You got suggestions?

Thanks, Stevo

Go w/ the Colt...;) When I started my quest for the right 1911 I went through a few diff't models and the XSE found a home w/ me
Good luck

Considering how expensive the Eclipse is, I dunno if its actually worth it. The Eclipse definitely fits your "pretty" criteria and Kimbers are usually accurate 1911s. Kimbers are great guns provided that they're reliable. Most of the ones I've shot have been accurate. The newer ones are back to the internal extractor which is a plus.

The Colts are pretty nice, but sometimes suffer asthetics problems such as off center recoil plug holes, overhanging slides and other minor details. They are nice though.

If you're looking for a pure range gun, either Kimber or Colt would be a good contender. Also check out Springfield Armory. Those three companies are the most popular for production 1911s.

I personally prefer something with frontstrap checkering, so I would go with the Kimber over the Colt. Skateboard tape fixes that problem, however I still prefer checkering over tape.

YMMV, Good luck

I too, prefer checkering of the front strap and 20 LPI is a little too
agressive for me; but when you grab a'hold of a gun of this nature
it sticks too your hand well. Now, with all that said I would look
towards Springfield Armory's 1911's; along the lines of the TRP.
However, I prefer the "look and feel" of the 1911 Springfield MC
Operator; even with its Pachmayr wrap around grips~!:D

I'm the odd voice...with a budget of a grand, I recommend getting a SA MilSpec and a Dillon SDB. With your progressive reloader from the get go, you'll be set blasting away at targets 'till whenever...

If either a Colt or a Kimber fits your grip and style of shooting equally well I'd give the nod to the Colt. I have both and love both, but my Kimber is a Series 1, the later ones I do not care for. Go for the Colt: no MIM parts, no funky Swartz "safety", you can't lose.

Go with a Colt; if you don't, you'll always wonder later why you didn't, and if you're missing something (and you would be). If you do, and it doesn't suit you :what: , you can always sell it at not too much of a loss.

Commander or Government Model in Blue. Nothin fancy. Not stainless. Not matte.

To me, everything else looks like a riced-up Honda.

i know im the oddball but my kimber custom target shoots excellent. alway good groups. i love it. i know others may have more experience but my kimber has never failed. i wouldnt trade it for anything. i think i paid about 750 for it at keislers in indiana. i know all you huslers could get it cheaper but i asked and no one helped me out. i'm sure colts are top of the line as always but i think kimber is really hard to beat. i wouldnt trade mine for a colt. sentimental i guess. ive shot every thing from cheap winchester white box to black hills and it ate everything without a hicup at all. and i think it looks good too. good bluing with a match steel barrel for under 1000 i say its a good deal. who else offers that. i was in the armed forces and i wish i could of carryied my kimber in the marines. well maybe when the states go for .45 instead of 9mm which will never be cheaper than .45. same effect as .308 vs .223, cost, weight, effectiveness, price. in that order. pun intended.

:D We just bought our 1st ever 45. My wife was the one who wanted it. I been a wheel gunner all my life. She bought a S&W 1911 45 model #108282 Stainless Steel. It has become my third favorite gun behind my 357 Colt Phyton, and Ruger SP101 for carry. My next will be a 1911 45 for me. Try looking at S&W 45's as they are one heck of a gun. Good Luck with what ever you Chose.:)

i just order a Eclipse Custom II 10mm , the gun looks wicked. i cant wait till it comes in and i can hold it. and shoot it.

Go with a Colt Series 70. All the others have a firing pin safety that's unnecessary and one more thing to break (although I've never heard of one breaking on a Colt. Kimber is another story entirely -- avoid any Kimber with a Roman numeral II in its name).

Before discounts you can get a Colt Series 70 for around $850. Dunno how much you can shave off that with a LE discount.

Being the new guy here I would offer a different thought, STI. I have or have had Colts, AMT, Kimbers, Les Baer, etc, and my STI Trojan in 38 Super is the best 1911 type I have. I do really like my Eclipse II in 10mm though as a close second.

Here is a second vote for the STI even though it looks as if you already ordered the Kimber. Good news is you bought it in 10mm so there is still room in the safe for an STI Trojan 5.0 or save up a little more and get the Legacy!

Now I need to decide on the 4 or 5 inch barrel. And I have not shot anybody on the range. yet.

But that made me laugh. I cant write so good as some folks could.:neener:

While either pistol will likely satisfy your accuracy requirement, I would second the motion for the Colt Series 70, as it would satisfy your requirement that the pistol be beautiful (as a traditionalist, I find the look of the Eclipse somewhat gawdy).
