I am looking into buying a new bolt-action rifle. i really want a .308 WIN. i am on a tight budget, so i am thinking under $500. what are some suggestions?

Savage 10. I've got the 110 in .30-06 and it's absolutely a tack driver that has never let me down.

I actually do have a .308 as well. It's a Rossi that I paid $148 for brand new - not quite as nice but I have to admit it shoots pretty good for a budget rifle too :).

+1 on savage- I have a 110 in .270 that is great and it was not to expensive.

You should also look at the ruger line- not sure what they have in your price point for .308 but I have a bunch of their stuff and have had 0 problems ( knock on wood) with any ruger I ever bought.

Weatherby Vanguard is an excellent rifle. Well made, strong and
very accurate. They usually run about $399 at Academy Sports.
I have 3 of them, a 30.06, a .308 and a .243. All of them shoot
1" at a 100 yards. Good luck.

Savage, definitely. The 11FCPX3 or whatever the package is. With the AccuTrigger, you will have quite the tack driver for very little money, and a very upgradeable platform for later on.

I bought an Enfield 2A1 for 70 bucks and it can shoot every bit as well as I can......chris3

Marlin XS7 308, Savage package (get the accutrigger), Thompson Center Venture, Weatherby Vanguard, Howa 1500, Rem 700 just a few decent rifles in the sub $500 range.

Stevens 200 and save the extra money for good optics, (Savage rifle without accutrigger) or a Savage of any series. Howa and Weatherby (lower end Vanguard made by Howa)

Howa m1500 or Weatherby s2. These are both very accurate guns and in my opinion are the best bang for the buck. In fact they are the only bolt guns I'll buy, and I've had remington, savage, stevens, marlin, tikka, ruger, cz, and mossberg.

I say Remington 770. Ive seen the R700 police tactcal models for just above that price, $539 or so that price at budgunshop.com. Gotta be some cheaper on sale. Anyhow, without a doubt the Remy 770 may not be the best, but it would be my choice in the $300-$350 range... I just like Remington...
I agree with the savage rifle sugestion as well... good value, maybe a better value in the sub 500 range now that I give it a unbiased thought.... :uhoh:

Ruger American rifle comes in under $400, if you don't mind the wait. I ordered one 3 days after announcement, none shipped yet in .308. If you don't want to wait, the Marlin XL7 is a sweet setup.

A Weatherby Vanguard or Howa will be under your budget and provide the most gun for the money. Lots of quality used guns that would allow you to get an even better gun within your budget.

Savage, Marlin, Stevens, Savage Axis - in that order.

Ruger, Tikka, Weatherby, Howa are others you should look at if the first list doesn't float your boat.

Good luck finding one for that price now though. You should still be able to get one for about 250.00 to 300.00.00....
The market on those has dried up a bit and the prices are easily over 200.00 a copy now.

I had a Stevens 200 in .223 and it was a great rifle for what it as designed for. A local store has the Ruger Americans on sale for $359, so I would look at those as well if they are available in your area.

I think it is great how many good shooting rifles are out there for under or around $500 buck. It really helps new folks get involved in shooting and provides great rifles for folks that are under a money crunch.

Good luck and let us know what you choose.

Matt

i would stay away from the remington 770. Some people like them, but there are much better made rifles for the same or less money (stevens, a few from TC, Howa, etc...)

Dick's Sporting Goods has Remington 700ADL Varmint package guns (w/4-12x40 scope) on sale for $449 after rebate. I bought one in .308, just for the barreled action. Savage is the best bang for your buck, and will likely out-shoot the 700ADL in factory configuration, but I was looking to "build" one the way I wanted.

For $500, I don't think you can beat a Savage. If that's what I had to work with, that's what I'd buy.
