I will go to the range tomorow and to test the .45s I've mentioned, and thean I will dedicde.

ps: Concering Ammo which non jhp defense load would you recomend in 45ap. JHps (with lead core) are probited in my coutry, but it would be possible to use soft points, lead and full copper hollow points

standard (cheap) 230 gr ball ammo is an acceptable choice for a .45 acp.

It's not as "sexy" as some of the newer choices. And technology HAS advanced since 1911... The newer rounds DO perform better. (I personally use HST or Gold Dots, depending on the gun)

But, that said, the "big but slow" specification of the ACP means that even the old faithful 230gr ball is a good choice. - And I have heard some fairly experienced people (one of them is a custom ammunition manufacturer as his profession) tell me that the 230gr ball ammo is what's in their carry-gun.

I'm not one of those "change is bad" people, but in this case, the old stuff still works well.

...

so, how did it go at the range ?

Fozzy_Bear Ok thx for your ammo tipps. Ball ammo would also be the cheapest chocie. Which 230 grain ball factory load would you recomend.

ps: I have tested some guns, and my favorites are the sig p220 und the colt 1911. I'll visit the range again an friday to check 2 smit&wesson guns, an 4566 and an model 22 revolver. An Model 1917 would also be very intersesting, but I don't know if I can find on here in austria.

Considering the OP's wish for a plinker and a SD pistol, I'll chime in with suggesting a Colt Commander in stainless (the O4091U).

Being stainless and with the shorter slide, it makes a great carry weapon due to it's corrosion resistance, and the shorter slide works well in an IWB holster. (That particular pistol is my primary carry pistol in VM2 holster).

Then for some great fun as a plinker, it's not only a load of fun with cheap .45 blasting ammo, but you can slip a .22 conversion kit on it and have at it.

There's a lot to like there.

The XD-45 is my personal favorite of all guns. Unfortunately there is no 22 conversion made for it. Reloading could greatly cut the cost of shooting the 45. is that something you might be interested in?
FMJ is the most reliable ammunition in any automatic of any caliber. It's all I use in both 45 and 380.
Glad you're able to try different guns before buying. Everybody has a different hand shape so there may be no one gun that fits us all.
Hope you at least give the XD( or HS) a try.

kitsapcharly I am also the opineon that the xd 45 is an very intersting pistol, and I will test one soon.:)

.45 Suggestion

If you are interested in a model 1911 style you should check out an STI. They are more expensive than most, but worth every penny. I've got an STI Eagle 6.0 and it's the finest handgun I've ever owned.
