Hey,
I have a standard model Ruger 10/22 (birch stock, blued metal, regular barrel, open sights). I was wondering what you all considered good accuracy with it. I was shooting it today, and I was able to keep my shots within a 3" group at 25 yards standing, and even tighter kneeling and prone. I know I could do better with a sling, I just haven't installed swivels yet.
So whaddaya think?

Well, the sights aren't the best in the world so it's hard to say. I'd think a bit better than that sould be achieved.

With the right ammo, an inch or so at 50 yards shouldn't be too difficult with a decent scope... certainly an inch at 25 yards.

As has been addressed on a couple other current threads, ammo plays a big role in the accuracy of any rifle, esp rimfire. Plus it's cheap! Go buy a box of several kinds and try again. I'd probably not rule out any ammo until tried with a scope.

I would like to install a new set of sights for my 10/22. I'd really like some adjustable irons... do you have any recommendations?
Thanks,
Nic

Nic, any question you could have regarding the 10/22 would likely be answered here:

www.rimfirecentral.com

The folks there are very into customizing the 10/22. I'm sure that somebody there knows where to find adjustable iron sights for the 10/22...

I have had a couple 10-22's. None of them shot well at all the way they were delivered. Go ahead and buy a barrel and scope at a minimum for it. The trigger kit from Volquartsen is well worth the money too.

Jackanape- haven't seen you since the mm bfc board closed down. How ya doin'?

HSMITH- Thanks for the suggestion, but I really want the gun to have iron sights so I can become proficient with them. I do like the trigger kit idea though.

Thanks for the info, folks. I appreciate it greatly.

I have found the 10/22 to be very accurate at 50 yards. With a scope, I regularly shoot 1 inch 10 shot groups. The factory trigger needs to be lighter, but it is an accurate gun.

Re: Replacement sights

I was just browsing Williams Gun Sights' webpage, and they make adjustable sights for the 10/22:

Williams 10/22 sight

Basically these are the kind of iron sights I want. I like the adjustable rear peep sight. Does anyone have experience with Williams products?

Thanks,
Nic

I have used them and they work fine. I have Williams sights on a 30-30, SKS, AK types, and so on. I prefer the peep too.

I have a standard 10/22 that will go into an inch at 50 yards with Winchester Super-X hollow points. This is with a Weaver 4x scope meant for .22s.

Two factors which work against obtaining best accuracy from a 10/22 out of the box are (1) the factory sights, and (2) the trigger.

Most .22s also tend to be a bit finicky as to what ammunition they shoot well. I suggest trying several different kinds of ammo in your rifle to see which shoots most accurately and with which it is reliable.

I lucked out in that my rifle really likes the first ammo I tried. I subsequently tried the cheap Winchester XPert .22s and the gun had several malfs.

I have an older 10-22 with a 4X Leupold scope on it. Shooting from the bench, it will keep five shots in two inches with Winchester, Remington and Federal ammo. This is a box-stock rifle, nothing on it but the scope.

With Eley Tenex or RWS R-50, it will keep five shots inside of one inch at fifty yards. ($10/box of 50 ammo)

I don't know if my rifle is typical or not, but I think the Leupold scope is a large part of the good accuracy.

BTW, I losened the barrel when it was new, and had a gunsmith friend torque the four allen screws evenly. Don't know if this helped or not, since it was done before I ever shot the rifle. but my friend the gunsmith thought it was a good idea.
