Hello, I didnt know where to post this soo..
With a .22 open sights from a bi-pod prone and bulk ammo, is a 1/2 inch 3 shot group good at 50 yards, and at 100 is a 2.5-3 inch good? Its a CZ 452 Ultra Lux and I was wondering if this is very good, or normal?

For open sights, very good accuracy. Shooting more shots into a group will normally make it larger. Aperture sights will group almost as good as a scope. Nice shooting.

if you really want a good idea of what you and your gun are capable of........5 shots are really the unofficial minimum.....10 being more ideal.

that being said......for open sights....from a bipod.....those groups sound promising.

Many would suggest a cloverleaf (all rounds touching) would be ideal, the CZ are accurate rifles, and should be able to cloverleaf at 100+ meters. BUT alot depends on the ammo, some guns (say a 10/22) may shoot 1.5" with target, but shoot 3/8th with a bargain brand (which may or may not be 'bulk')

Try different brands of ammo and shoot at least 5 rounds preferably 10 rounds. You're CZ will like a specific brand of ammo more than another kind. Bulk ammo is fine for plinking and very inexpensive but if you are going for precision you will have to buy more expensive ammo like rws, eley, lapua, wolf, etc. I like CCI which is a little more than bulk but less than the ones I have listed and it is a very consistant bullet and reliable. Good shooting by the way.

Thanks guys. I'm only 14 and I thought it was really good. Im planing on puting on a Nikon 3x9x40 when i get higher rings. And get some better ammo.

scope doesn't teach good sight practice, it helps compensate, a guy who can hit at 1000 meters, will be able to hit at 100 with IRON SIGHTS easy, all day every day, at 14 look up Apple seed shoots, and the basics of good sights (DON'T go 'sniper' it's takky kool aid, and has too much BS to weed out for decent info)

Read something like the Marine Core Marksmanship Manual (its on line) or check USAPA for the Army manual, and even Squad Designated Marksman Maunal.

Learn the basics, and you will be the guy getting hell for some Rambo Wannabe for only hitting your 100m pistol target once, when you put them all in the same hole.

See, you just smile at the Taktikool guy, and say, nope, they are all there, sorry I left my shot gun at home today. Learn the basics now and save your self the hard trip back to them.

With iron sights your in the ball park.. Not too shabby...

Post #5 spoke VOLUMES... different guns like different ammo, mix it up, you may find one that will print tighter... When you do, load up...

Welcome to the frustrating part of shooting.. the ever present, never ending quest for accuracy... Nothing say's it all, like the one well placed round...

Thanks guys. I'm only 14 and I thought it was really good.

That is quite good , there are many here who could not do the same when they were 14 and I'm sure I'd be one of them.

It is good accuracy especially with open sights. You will get better with more practise.

nice shooting, always wanted one of them 28.6" barrel ultra lux, awesome for shooting irons with a long sight radius w/poundage adj. trigger. yes you could always mount a scope, but eventually will get bored and you find yourself removing it again to shoot irons which is more fun and challenging.

1/2" at 50 is great. 3" at 100y could be better, but you might need better ammo (for consistent velocity), and you may have to pay attention to the wind to get those 100y group sizes down.

Good work!

You're doing well. I'd suspect the bipod might be hurting your 100 yard shooting. Get a good bag and watch your groups tighten up.

Jeff, it isn't an anit sniper mentality, rather, just google 'sniper'

WAY too much 'tactical' BS, too many 'Call of Duty' Delta Force Recon Ranger Operators talking EQUIPMENT

when it IS Mindset, SKILL SET (Training, Practice) then Equipment in that order.
Rather than try sort through all the
"How to low crawl in elephant grass so you can silently slit your enemies throat"
OR "which silencer for my .50BMG sniper rifle"

I suggest that he learn HOW & WHY his rifle shoots like it does.
An apple seed shoot, or similar is GREAT place to start.

In the .22 world, ware do you set the bar to be considered as an excellent marksman? With iron and with glass? I'd say the boy has great shots with iron. I'm just curious myself of what a .22 can perform.

i'd say those groups are pretty good! especially for bulk ammo

(who was a sniper in WWII so I don't know where the anti-sniper mentality comes from) could shoot hawks at 1000 yards with iron sights (it was a different time when hawks were plentiful but rabbits were almost extinct so hunters thought the way to bring back rabbits was to kill the hawks)

come on

Thanks a bunch for all the advice guys! I think all the air between the posts didn't help either.
I do plan on putting a scope on eventually just to see what is capable with it.
And I totally agree Shadow about how everyone thinks shooting/sniping in particualar is having a big black gun with more gizmos than a swiss army knife and pulling the trigger.
I use a pellet gun at 70 yards I bought a while back for getting used to drop and how ind affects it. And bow shooting helps me stay consistent between shots.

I think a 22 is really under estamated.
And I'm gona look at the appleseed thing right now. Thanks again!
always wanted one of them 28.6" barrel ultra lux, awesome for shooting irons with a long sight radius w/poundage adj. trigger.
You'll love one, trust me :)

Keep shooting that pellet gun, and everything else will be easy. And yes, 22s are underrated by many.

Try some 20 gauge shotgun at some point if you can, its a different animal, but it will teach you a lot.

The best shooter I ever met (who was a sniper in WWII so I don't know where the anti-sniper mentality comes from) could shoot hawks at 1000 yards with iron sights

must have been a garand.

i once shot a crow off the top of one of those super tall transmission towers in kansas with mine,

from abilene, tx.

I have a Remington 870, I need to shoot it more though..
Have any of you seen the Mossberg MVP? I was thinking about one after I get the $$$.

i would say that you are shooting excellent with the iron sights.

is your 100yd groups verticle in shape?

I want to hear more about the hawk at 1000yds.

Gunsarefun.
I don't get hung up on # of shots in a group. If it is 1, 3, 5 or 10 and you compare to the same round count groups you will see if you are improving. Take a target and put 25 target dots spread out on it. If you can shoot 1 shot on each bull and hit it you are shooting exceptionally well.
Sometimes I shoot 22 rounds on 1 target. Sometimes I shoot reverse groups. I shoot until I hit the X ring. If it is 1 shot = great. 2 is not as good. 3 is worse.

more like a square.

hmmm. you said 3 shot groups and im trying to picture a square shaped 3 shot group in my mind without much success, lol.

the reason i asked if the 100yd groups were stringing vertical is i was going to suggest higher grade ammo might tighten things up.
