I am looking into buying an assault rifle here shortly, since Obama is coming into office..

I am wondering whats good to look at..I know all of them are semi-auto(wish civis could get burst or full auto), but I can deal with it.

I have looked at AR15's and like a few of them..

anyone seen the Robarms XCR?

I really like the HK36,416,the XM8(was a sweet looking gun), and I really like the look of the scar

my question is the guns I mentioned I cant own as a civilian right? or can I get a permit or some sort to buy them??

If I cant what gun is close to matching the look or style of the 416,Scar or XCR?

Thanks

If you want an "assault rifle", and you have the $, I'd get an m240 and a mk19 auto grenade launcher. ~$150k -200k might do it.

Legality for owning a semi-auto rifle is dependent upon the state in which you live. We need more information.

I handled and shot a few rounds through another club member's RobArms XCR at the range, and it was a nice nice rifle. If you're into NICE stuff, I'd check out the Sig Arms 556, which is also really really nice.

Nothing wrong with an AR, or for that matter, an AK clone also. But those I suppose are just nice, not Nice.

Depends. What state do you live in?

wish civis could get burst or full auto

That too is legal, again depending on the state. It does however take much more money.

Koontzy,

TRGRHPY is trying to have a joke at your expense. True assault rifles are "select-fire" meaning that they operate in both semi-automatic and some form of full-auto. (3 shot burst or full-auto)
Unfortunately, his joke kind of back-fired because he then suggested that his choice of assault rifles would be the M240 and the Mk19. Neither of THEM is an assault rifle, either. The M240 is a general purpose machine gun and the Mk19 is an automatic grenade launcher. He thinks it is funny that you don't know what an assault rifle is. Others may find it funny that he doesn't know, either.

The guns you're asking about, in semi-automatic form, are simply military style autoloaders and not actually assault rifles. In most of the United States there are no restrictions on ownership of such things beyond what would apply to any other rifle. (No felonies, above the age of 18, etc.) If you can pass an NICS check to own a .30-30 Winchester, you can own a semi-auto version of an AK-47 (or AKM, AK-74, etc), or an FN-SCAR, or Robarms, or the civilian version of the HK36 (called the SL-8, I believe) etc., etc.

Your home state may have further prohibitions on ownership of military-style auto loading rifles. Look at the "state laws" section of www.nra-ila.org for your state's rules.

If you want to own a true assault rifle -- and you have a clean record and meet all the other requirements for gun ownership AND your state allows it (most do) -- you can purchase one from a "Special Occupational Tax Class III" Federal Firearms License holder. You will have to pay a tax of $200 (per gun) and pass a background check (each time you buy one) and jump through a few more hoops.

Unfortunately, no new machine guns (anything full-auto or burst-fire capable) have been allowed to be sold to civilians since '86, so you may only purchase older models. Your HK36 and other newer styles will not be available to civilians. But if you want an M16, AK, M14, or other style that was sold before 1986, you can find them. Unfortunately, because the supply is so limited but the demand is high, prices are outrageous. Expect an M-16 to cost about $17,000 -- an AK to be something above $13,000, etc.

Good luck and I hope you find good answers here!

A good semi-automatic rifle would be a Remington .270 or 30-06 caliber with a wooden stock. Browning also makes nice semi-automatic rifles. A 300 Winchester Magnum would be a nice choice in the Browning. I believe a lot of companies make good semi-automatic .22's. The Ruger 10/22 would probably be the one that you can buy the most accessories for.

If the op can take a second or two to list where he lives, perhaps we can help him out.

Sam: The only thing I was trying to get across is how people blindly state that they want an assault/military-type rifle. Just like how people who want a sport motorcycle call all of them "Ninja's". "oh yeah, sounds/looks cool...I gotta have one. What's the biggest one I can get?" I was also going to add "tank" to the list, but thought that was going a bit far. I also wasn't attempting to be accurate on the price of the items listed either, so maybe you can report back with a correction on that as well. But thank you for setting me straight on that, I truly did not know the difference between a grenade-launcher and a rifle.

Inspector:
The Ruger 10/22 would probably be the one that you can buy the most accessories for.

You're right, that is a good option for accessories. There are several kits that can be purchased that can convert it to have a tactical look but save much $ on ammo. The Nordic Components kit is a decent one. Tapco makes one as well. There are others but I don't recall the names at the moment.

Saw a few nice "Assault Rifles" yesterday at a gun show, but the $15,000 and up price tags made me rethink getting one :)
