.22 Mag ammo is really adding up and I'm looking for a cheaper alternative in the way of a semi auto rifle under $250. Any suggestions? No preference to tube or detachable magazine feed.

I picked up a Marlin 60 with a cheap 3x9 scope for $90. It shoots better than I do. From a rest with any ammo I've used including Stingers, it will stay under 1/2"@25 yards for a 10 round group.
You have many options in that price range. Two of the best sellers are the Ruger 10/22 (box magazine) and the Marlin Model 60 (tube magazine). I have a newer Ruger and an older Model 60.
The Ruger 10/22 has about a bazillion aftermarket accessories. The Model 60 has a few.
My older Model 60 has a better trigger than the Ruger, and is noticeably more accurate. Dunno if that's the case for the newer ones. It is a bit more difficult to clean than the Ruger.

The Tompson-center .22 is a good little semi,and is under that price now.they were higher when new.They resemble a 10-22 somewhat but were touted as being more accurate.......couldn't vouch for that myself though.

Probably your two best bets are the Ruger 10/22 or the Marlin 60 (I have both). Both are fun but personally I prefer the Marlin. The Remington 597 also seems to be interesting but I don't have any first hand experience.
The Ruger has more aftermarket stuff if you want to customize it. The Marlin is more fun and more accurate out of the box (along with a much better trigger). The Marlin is quite a bit less money, the Ruger is a little more reliable.

Shoot a Remington 597 side by side with a Ruger 10/22 and youll quickly realize which is the superior rifle-the 597!
Its definitely the best everyday semi-auto .22lr out there.

Another vote for the Marlin 60, very acurate very reliable.
On the other hand if you have a customization bug, you can't beat the accesories available for the Ruger

I'm going to be the jerk who ignores your stated requirements and says, why don't you consider a bolt-action like the CZ 452? For the money, it's a far better rifle right out of the box than most if not all of the semi-autos mentioned here. I love a 10/22, but not until I've replaced the barrel, the stock, and the trigger group, at minimum. By that time, you're talking $400 to $500, without a scope. My CZ is box stock, and I wouldn't change a thing.

OTOH, I like my ruger 10/22T as is, lightly modded, and it would be perfect for most people with less than $20 of modifications (extended mag release, less than $5. Auto bolt release, either $15 or some time with a dremel.)

There's a 99% condition Remington 597 synthetic with a heavy target barrel in my local shop for $179. If I wasn't going to be buying 2 other guns next week, I'd probably have to pick it up. I had a 597 stainless laminated for a while but sold it due to having too many other rimfires. Probably the most comfortable stock on a generic 22 semi auto rifle I've ever shot.

Not to hijack a thread, but does anyone have experience with the Marlin Papoose? Does it come in blue, and how does it compare with the Marlin 60. Use: plinking, small game, and "just because". Or stay with a model 60 and not worry about mags and keep it real simple?.

I have a 10/22, and had a Marlin Model 60. IME, the Ruger is more reliable, requiring less frequent cleaning. I also prefer the detachable mag on the Ruger but YMMV.
Mine have been comparable, accuracy-wise.

See I had a 10/22 Deluxe stock with a fixed 4X . Accurate, reliable, and just a classic blue and wood look. Umm I get stuff like this and my 22/45 set up and someone has a NEED with CASH in hand to go play games...in hurry. (Cha -Ching-profit).
My Marlin 60 (same fate happened to it) with the 1.5 # trigger , plastic stuff replaced with machined metal and 'tricked out"and all was more accurate and reliable. Just thinking about another toy, I like blue and wood, and didn't see Papoose listed as such. Thanks for the input.
