Hey everyone,

I'm new to the site and thought I'd register after putting around on here for a bit. Seems like a cool site.

I'm looking to expand my gun collection and am looking for a auto rifle (thinking .223 or .308 due to cheap ammo) but being that I live in California, it seems as though pickin's are slim. I've been looking at Springfield M1A SOCOM and Loaded models (expensive) and Mini 14/30's (haven't heard that much great stuff about their accuracy) and am just wondering if those are really my only two options. I'd really prefer to stay away from bolt action rifles and would probably prefer a barrel slightly shorter than the loaded M1A but it doesn't look like there is much out there that is Ca legal in the form of semi-auto rifles. Any suggestions?

With no consideration of money involved, no question...

M1A.

Grab a M1 Garand while you are at it.

And brainstorming...

Are Saigas legal in CA?

From what I understand, Ruger has finally addressed and corrected some of the issues with Accuracy on the Mini's.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I forgot about Kel-Tec.

I'm not sure if Saigas are legal here. With Ca's gun laws, I more often just assume things are banned until I actually see them in the flesh in a gun store here.

While I don't have a "cost is of no concern" mentality with this gun, I'm not afraid to spend $2k on a nice rifle if need be. I just want to make sure that the Springfield is worthy of the price tag. I'm not cheap, but I want to be getting my money's worth.

I'd get a Garand.
I believe Springfield makes a .308 Tanker.

My reasoning being that if you can only have up to 10 rounds, you might as well get a fast reload.

I hear ya on the cost.

Of course, there will be a multitude of M1A owners coming by this thread shortly to tell you that the M1A is worth every penny spent on them.

And they are probably right.

I considered an M1A recently, but went with a LR-308 instead.

Assuming you're talking about fixed mag AR's, I hear you Hobo. I want to stay away from the fixed mag guns.

And you gotta love the reasoning behind Ca's laws where a Mini 14 is legal yet an AR isn't due just to aesthetics. Can't have those "scary" looking guns floating around in our state.

Let's see, Garands, M1 carbines, SKSs, SVT-40s, Hakims, SU-16CA — I have owned them all here in CA. You should go to calguns.net and learn something about CA law before you buy. There are a lotta options, including, yes, ARs, AKs and Saigas if you understand the law and follow it to the letter.

Don't leave out sporting semi autos. Most of the c&r semi autos are legal like Remington model 8 or 81, I think Winchester made 1 that looks alot like an 88 but the 88 is lever action. Garands & carbines are fun. The Mini-30 & 14 are no tack drivers at a 1000 yrds but are fun, cheap to shoot & if my 8 year old can hit the rams at 500 meters with a mini14 they can't be that bad lol.

Forget an AR. It's just ridiculous what is and isn't legal in the state. None and I mean NONE of the options are acceptable to me. It's either a fixed magazine, limited to 10 rounds and fed from the top OR you have to go with a spin on the pistol grip that is terribly uncomfortable and awkward...and it looks REALLY stupid. Other dumb laws on forward grips, flash suppressors, etc. Since the ban went into effect, AK and illegal ARs in the hands of criminals have INCREASED. What?! CRIMINALS disobeying the law? Hard to believe.

Diane Finstein is just about my least favorite person in the world.
