So reading up on the .458 SOCOM all the semi-autos in this caliber are AR-10's with no other platforms...

Sure you can get a bolt action or even a single shot, but a CA State Legal semi auto??? NO.... Now I live in IL and not CA, but if I want something like a M1 or M14 pattern rifle? No such luck...

The 458 SOCOM was designed specifically for the ar15 (not the ar 10 that's bigger), and it hasn't migrated much yet from that parent platform. I wouldn't mind it in a bolt gun to go with the ar pistol but I can get a handful of other 45 cal cartridges in bolt guns that use cheaper, or at least equivalent cost, brass. It is a great cartridge but not enough following yet to pursue other platforms for it. My brother wants a mini 14 in 458 SOCOM, and is convinced it'll work. But I built two 458 ar15's for what it would cost to find out... There is a company that makes Savage style replacement barrels if you want a bolt gun, but again $$$

Sorry I was misthinking of the .45-70 Auto as I was looking at that this morning as well. However how popular is the .458 SOCOM?

The 458 Socom held popularity over the 450bushmaster for a handful of years, but with the new straightwall requirements (allowments, really) have pushed the 450 bushmaster to the front.

The 458 socom, however, is well supported in the market. It’s expensive to feed, such it’s best a reloader‘s cartridge, but it’s a delightful mini-action hammer.

Really when you think about it there aren’t all that many non-AR, nonmilitary semiauto production rifles it could be chambered in. Remington 7400, Browning BAR. What am I leaving out other than something like a M1-A, FAL or other such military pattern rifle?

Well a M1A and maybe a Saiga Rifle.

There have been .458 special projects in aks, and minis that im aware of, as well as bolt guns, but nothing factory made besides the AR i believe.

Ive given up my dream of a .458 mini, ill probably settle for a .350 legend.
