I plan to put a 6.5x55 match grade barrel on a pawned Accutrigger Savage 110 I picked up cheap. The gun will be for bench work 200-300 yd bench work and 300-600 and medium game. Barrel length will be essentially 26" (including suppressor) which is pretty standard for a Savage.

What commercial stocks represent a good trade-off between a walking long range hunter and a benchrest gun. I am 6'3" and prefer a 14" LOP.

Almost all of my rifles I use for hunting are also my long range rifles. The weight has never really bothered me,but I also know that I'm not climbing mountains with them.
A good sling is a must for carrying a heavier rifle.
I have several Choate Tactical stocked rifles that I hunt with,as well as some Laminated stocked rifles.
For hunting,I like the Boyd's Thumbhole stocks. I have one on my 223 and the 6.5-06 that I'm building.

I have the Choate Tactical stocks on my 6.5 Creedmoor,25/06 and 308 caliber rifles.

There are plenty of aftermarket stocks available today from H-S Precision / Bell & Carlson / Choate / Boyd's / Manners / McMillan / Stockade / Sharp Shooters Supply.
It all depends on what you want, and how much you want to spend.

TX, beautiful rifle builds, great work, but i do not understand why the Savage is left handed and the other one right handed?

I to like boyd's stocks. I have one of there JR Classics now shortend to just a classic on a 17 year old custom hunter thats blocked and bedded and been wet more time than most nice rifles. Still free floating and still a very accurate custom. I shoot both left hand and right hand so no thumb hole stocks on a hunter for me.

Best sling for humping a heavy hunter around is a Boonie Packers Safari Sling found at cabela's

Can someone with a Choate Varmint measure the height of the hand gap? I have pretty big hands.

I shoot LH,but could only buy a Savage Varmint action in RH to build the 6.5 Creedmoor off of. I also shoot a 10 FCP 308 that's RH.
I can shoot either way,but prefer to shoot LH.

From the bottom of the trigger guard to the bottom of the stock is 3".
The Ultimate Varminter / Sniper stocks are great stocks for a rifle that's only going to be shot off a bench or in the prone position, but they are way too bulky and heavy for carrying around.

Thanks. Actually I have big hands with relatively skinny fingers. I'm more worried about the front of the opening where the meaty part of my hand goes.
