for the second week in a row i have been able to spend my tuesday afternoon, where i want to be rather than where i have to be. and it was a nice relaxing, and productive day. then I have a minor incident...
the good; for the first time in 6 years I have a centerfire rifle/load combo that WILL shoot better than I can. it looks l;ike my streak of horrid luck with my 700 SPS-V may be over. even with a sorely out of practice shooter (me) behind the trigger, and the starting load under 150gr spire point hunting bullets, no (5-shot) group was larger than 1.146" at 100, and most were under 3/4".
that may not sound like much but for me, as i said it's been 6 years since I've owned a rifle that i knew was capable of 1/2 MOA or better, much less been able to shoot a sub 1" group myself. so it's a small personal victory.
Now for the Aw HECK!!
after i'd finished with the Remington, i broke out my 10/22, which I worked with my father to restock and build into a more target style configuration. everyhting seemed to go fine, or at least as expected. I was using bulk pack ammo not known for high quality, and both of my magazines need cleaning/tuning, so i was expecting to experience some feeding and extraction problems. the Aw #@$& moment came when i was packing up and found The following object sitting in my hat on the bench
at first i thought it was a piece of the wooden shooting bench that got caught somehow, then i turned it over
at that point i got a sinking feeling and examined my stock
and yes it fits back into that spot fairly well
I figure, that at some point the casing involved was thrown through the ejection port juuust right and the case mouth caught on the stock and that the bolt handle then caught the back of the case at least once knocking it further in/on until the case split off a piece of the stock.
So now the question becomes Do I

So now the question becomes Do I
- Glue the chip back in place than sand and refinish that area
- Or do i skip replacing the chip, and re-contour the area ahead of the ejection port to lessen the likelihood of this ever happening again? then refinish the area
