There is a local gunshop with a Sig 220 .45 in the case. It is in around 80% condition, mechanically perfect, it just has some finish loss on the slide and signs of old rust. Its priced at $400. I like its trigger and I am a fan of SA/DA but for a 220 in that condition, isnt $400 a little steep?

No - that's about as cheap as they get. I'd buy it, were I presented with the opportunity.

I'd buy it for that, I wouldn't mind having another 220 to leave in the truck, and that one sounds like it would fill that role just fine.

I have a vintage west german SIG P220 that is in ~85% condition...I paid $390 otd 2 years ago. $400 is a fair price for a great .45!

Paid $449 with three mags for mine in 90%- no case or anything else. As long as it is in good mechanical shape you can send it to Sig for the CPO reconditioning for about $150 iirc and that includes new Siglite night sights, replacement springs & wear parts and refinishing, I think.

If you gotta deal w/ rust, $400 might be a little steep...if it's superficial, you might be okay, otherwise, see if you can haggle it down a little.

Purchased my total West German manufactuered SIG-SAUER .45 caliber
P220A (NIB) on 31 March 1995 for $639.95 + sales tax. It was what is known
as my "Personal Bacon Saver" on more than one occassion during my tenure
as a Law Enforcement Professional Officer. If I had to get down too owning
just one handgun; I'm afraid this one would get the nod cuz of its extreme:

RELIABILITY
ACCURACY

I have bought five P220s over the years, and I have never been able to get anyone down under $400 regardless of finish wear. They just seem to have a magic threshold at $400. No harm in trying, but don't be surprised if the seller balks.

Given how stone-ax reliable they are, I consider $400 to be a reasonable price to pay for one as long as it's functional and any scarring of the slide is likely to be erased by a good beadblasting/refinish.

Funny how a good used P220's trigger, especially the easy DA pull, let alone the nice crisp break of the SA pull, talks to you..

Did you buy it, or did you study it long, and play it wrong?

I didnt buy it yet. I may get it, may not, still undecided. Upon a second inspection, the mechanics look perfect, theres not that much wear on the internals. The frame looks excellent and the slide is in about 85% condition. The slide shows signs of old rust/slight pitting toward the rear, on the top/1 side. The rust has been cleaned off. Hmmmm...

$400.00 is an OK price for a P220 in the condition that you describe. I've seen some LEO trade-ins for $350.00 that look like what you are describing.

The older Sigs finish was not that durable. Its hard to find one that hasn't been a safe queen that is in great condition cosmetically.

If you are looking for a P220, buy it, shoot it, then decide what you want to do with it. You can always have the slide refinished or just leave it the way it is.

Sigs with "character" are a beautiful thing!

Well, I got it. A little cold blue and it will look just fine. I'm gonna go out back and shoot it right now. I got it for $420 OTD with 2 mags full of Winchester Silvertip and Federal Hydra's, and a cheapo holster.:)

Here's a couple pics. I just cold blued it and it looks great now. Pics were taken before cold blue. Just put 2 mags of Blazer brass through it. It has problems feeding from one of the mags (rounds dont tip up far enough at the nose) but the other mag works perfectly. Targets were 3" stickies, distance was 30ft and I was using 2 hand weaver type stance. Not bad targets for my first time shooting a Sig ANYTHING. The top right flyer was my buddies shot:neener:. Now, the plastic grips are cracked, will the "side mag release" grips fit? Or where can I get inexpensive grips for the euro model?

You were worried about that? That thing's just "slightly-less-new" rather than "used and abused." Replace those cracking grips, and you oughta be fine, IMO. Sounds like you made out with a steal with all of that at $420, though personally I would've left the "character touches".

$400 isn't bad. The 220 isn't meant to look pretty. It's a Volvo 240 with a V8 under the hood.:p

Not that Sig doesn't try to spruce it up. All those silly beavertails, grips, finishes, slide materials...jeez. I have a plain Jane 220 and it's never failed to fire, except when the return spring broke. If you do get it, go ahead and change that spring out asap as a precaution.
