I love it when the "holier than thou" shotgunners crap on the rifle/pistol range shooters.

Club I was a member at in WI had a couple legitimate behavior issues with a few rifle/pistol shooters. Became a huge pissing match, with lots of hysterical shotgunners suddenly worried about range safety and design. Their solution was to sut down the range. We don't need antis to shut us down, we can alienate lots of shooters, all by ourselves!

Most amusing point that came out of this was that several leading members liked to enjoy their beer (hey, it was Wisconsin!) between trap rounds on Sundays. No safey issues there....:banghead:

it may be that your range is bending knee to political correctness, but the it may be that they are caught in the middle.

A 50 BMG is one hell of a round. Comparing it to a .505 or something simply due to similarity of bore size is akin to comaring a .22lr with .223.

a deer sized magnum may move faster, but a 50 BMG has got one hell of a ballistic co-efficient, so it can and will carry very far. Something like a .505 just doesn't move at the same velocities, OR shoot nearly as heavy of slugs

50 BMG = 750 grain bullet at 2700 fps = 12,775 energy
505 gibbs = 525 gr bullet at 2200 fps = 6,100 energy
300 rem Ultramag = 180 gr bullet at 3250fps = 4,200 energy

So yea 50 BMG may well be unsafe in an area where 505 gibbs IS safe.

Now, if some guy with nothing better to do sees one of those '60 minutes' episodes about the 'evil child impregnating 50BMG of doom!' 10 minite tv segment, and he is somewhat annoyed at the fact there is a gun range in his area, he may well call them up, ask them 'do you guys shoot those evil 50s there?" and if yes "Whoa! is that even safe? those things can shoot down 747! this isn't a deer rifle like a 30-30 we are talking about!"

a gun club can get itself in a sutiation where they must take the 'reasonable' step of 'checking how safe it is' before allowing more 50 bmg to be fired. Unfortunately, to get a true expert out and test it would be big $$$ hence they end up defacto banned.
