I am looking for a decent store where I can get my hands on a variety of FAL (prefer DSA) and/or AR (Bushmaster) in .308 in Northern New Jersey. Does anyone know of one?

I want to buy a .308, but I want to see the gun and handle it before I buy it.

All the places I usually do business do not carry anything in stock (Meltzer's, Ramsey Outdoors, Bullet Hole). I called one place (Sarco's) to see if they had anything in stock and the saleman told me that the DSA FAL in .308 was not legal in NJ. Doesn't sound quite right to me.

I live up by the GWB but I don't mind driving an hour or so if I can see some guns and get a feel for them and their features by handling them (not shooting).

If anyone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. Thanks.

I can't say that they carry what you are looking for but it might be worth a shot.

In addition to banning firearms with two or more "evil features" just like federal law, NJ also bans several firearms by name. The FAL is on the list. It's not quite that simple, but that's the short answer.

I'm pretty sure the DSA SA-58 is Jersey Legal, but I'm not a lawyer, ymmv, etc.

I'd not be real surprised to hear that some folks haven't heard that post ban configs not on the "banned by name" list are legal. It's not exactly common knowledge, and no one in official capacity is very willing to say anything in particular is legal.

There's a letter from the state AG that basically says...count evil features to figure out if you've got an illegal rifle or not.

geekWithA.45, the SA-58 could be legal, but it's really up to the folks who interpret the law in NJ. One of the NJ State Police links above says that the Springfield M1A is legal because it was "redesigned" in 1994 (to be post-ban under federal law), and the "new" M1A is not "substantially identical" to the M14S type on the NJ ban list. The same argument could be made for the SA-58, but unless it has been made and accepted, it's a gray area that I wouldn't want to explore. Then again, I only visit NJ to shoot; I don't have to live there.

Neveragain26,

I live in Cliffside Park, so you have to be close to me. I called up the NJSP asking the same question. According to them, if it meets the current federal post ban configuration, then it is in compliance with the NJ law. Of course if you call them back and ask a different person, they may tell you something else. I also was think about getting a DSA. Your best bet is to call DSA and they can tell you who they ship to in NJ. I've called them myself in the past and they were very helpful with this info.

Hope this helps,
Ken

Thanks. I am going to call DSA and ask. I also need an FFL to receive the gun so I will check with them also as they should be familiar with this, too.

I am calling today and I will keep you posted.

I just called DSA and was informed that the FAL's are NJ legal as long as they do not have 20 round mags. NJ can accept up to 15 round mags as being legal (according to the gal I spoke to) but DSA does not make 15 round mags. They make 5, 10 and 20 (or was that 30?) rounders.

She told me I can call in the order to DSA and find an FFL to ship the gun to and she even gave me the number of a few FLL's on record with DSA I could call.

So my next step is to confirm an FLL who is willing to handle this, configure the gun I want (stock, grip, rail, etc), call in the order to DSA and then get the FLL to take over from there.

Ken, if you need details you can pm me and I will let you know all I found out (name at DSA, number and number of FFL's to call).

Thanks again to all.

Not sure where to ask this question...

Try Ray's Sport Shop, Rt. 22 West, North Plainfield.

(908) 561-4400

But I heard a rumor that Ray's might be closing up soon... is there any substance to it and anything we can do?

Re: 15 round mag limit:

You may permanently or temporarily block a mag to 15 rounds to make it legal. Or at least, get out of jail (eventually).

I know an FFL who is freindly and realtively cheap ($25) for the state, but he isn't up north.

Rays didn't have any FALs last time I was there. Can't say I have seen any FALs anyplace I have been in (Which in this state is about 4).

Ray's is open. Rumor is ray is considering getting out of the business. Discussed this with some of my elders in the area. THey laughed and said basically "can't remember when ray hasn't said that." (actually can't remmeber if the owners name is actually ray, but since that is the name of the store my brain has conveniently substituted it for the rest of time).

As for the over the border thing, don't know if it works as there is an extra bit of paperwork NJ requires for a long gun. It's stupid, but might make you a felon if you don't do it right.

I found an FFL in Pearl River, NY who can handle the whole thing for $55.00. He told me FFL's can make transfers in other states as long as they share a common border.

I plan on ordering the gun next week and I will keep you posted as to how it goes.

Thanks again.

You can (and should, IMO) buy your long guns over the border.

You must buy them from an FFL, and you have to fill out all the same paperwork that you'd fill out in NJ.

The FFL must follow the federal and state laws of both states in question, which means he won't sell you anything on the banned by name list, or anything in a pre-ban config. NJ says that the FFL must keep the NJ paperwork on file, and they will do exactly that. Flipside, NJ has no jurisdiction to look at papers outside their borders... :)

Hi All-

Anybody know the quality of the gunsmiths at Ray's Sport Shop for installing new sights on either a pistol or longarm? I have no idea if the sights I choose will be "drop-in" or if machining work will need to be done to get them to fit. I'm taking care to have quality work so the refinishers won't have to fix a butchered slide or barrel.

Let me know what you think for any of the big shops in the NY/NJ/PA area.

After the Hungerford Massacre in August 1987-which involved a heavily armed maniac going on a rambo-style killing spree-the UK government passed a supposed Combat/Assault weapon ban in the guise of The 1988 Firearm Ammendment Act, which was a new variation to the original 1968 Act.This act primarily was supposed to ban all semi-automatic assault weapons-including some shotguns- but us Brits came up with an almost original solution.

Someone wrote to Olympic Arms in America and told them of the subsequant change in law, so Olympic Arms started to export AR-15s without the semi-auto gas functions, to conform to UK law.The Practical-Shooters were once again pleased that they could legally own an AR-15 and started taking them to PR and service rifle matches. However some of the AR-15 enthusiasts were not happy, because they were used to semi-autos and the T-shaped cocking handle was slow to use, but begruginly used them because this was to be the closest that they would get, to owning an assault weapon, again.

Ruger some years later made an M14 Ranch rifle for export to the UK.Its designation is: Ruger M14 Ranch Rifle B.A.O. (Bolt-Action Operated.)
Saiga has modified their assault weapons to straight-pull action, to be exported for the UK market. This could be handy for the Australian shooters and for you NEW JERSEY SHOOTERS, if you are not affected by a military-appearance ban. It seems that a hangun ban has occurred in your state-like one occurred in my country, but in old Jersey-the Channel Island-they are still allowed to own handguns.

Thanks for the tip, Sterling, but as it stands, NJ shooters can have fully blown semi-auto ARs and whatnot, as long as they don't put a flash hider or bayo mount on it. Unlike Californians, they don't have to make Frankenguns.
