I am going to go against the current of the thread here a bit - you say ranges to 150 yards, mostly target shooting and maybe hunting next year.

If you said mostly hunting with some range use, I would say 3-9 for sure - something with clear glass, good eye relief and maybe a 30/30 reticle.

IMO, if you are on the range more than hunting, 9x is not going to work well for precision shooting at 150 yards. Something in the 14-24x range is going to be useful and you may want fine crosshairs, good detents on the turrets and zero reset if possible (probably not at <200 though).

A scope can do both, but for hunting I think fairly lightweight, crosshairs visible in crappy light and maybe basic rangefinding ability. For target shooting, I want lots of magnification and clarity, adjustments that are easy to count and reset and as little as possible obscuring the target. A bit of weight does not bother me for a target scope either - I just have to lug the rifle from the car to the range.

I'm going to go against the tide here and say you need to spend upwards of $200 for a 308 scope. My entry level minimum is the Nikon Buckmaster line. I bought a 6-18X40MM with mildot for about $300. They may be $350 now.

You may say you want to shoot 100 or 200 yards maximum but that nice 308 cartridge will beg you to shoot longer distances and you will circum to the urge and wish you bought a better scope.

I would love to do that but every place I go shooting doesn't have any real distance.

In which case the 6-18 is way too much scope. There have been a lot of mised deer because a hunter thought he needed a high power scope.Just try to pick up a jumped deer at 20 yards with that scope.

If I could get a Bushnell 3200 3-9 for $169 I would jump on it quick! Did I say quick?
Unless you already ordered one, you weren't quick enough. The Bone Collector models with a BDC reticule are only $179 though. Still the same Elite 3200. Shipping is an even $20. Still puts the scope o your door for under $200. Better scope than the Buckmaster, which isn't a bad scope at all. The current model that replaced the one on closeout goes for $350.

Thanks for all the help guys. I'm going to either the redfield or the nikon buckmaster. Just depends on which one has the better price at the time of purchase. Now just gotta choose the rings I want/need.
