Which of these scopes do you all think would work best for close in hunting-fast shooting situations hunting coyotes and deer - EoTec, ACOG, Leupold HAMR, or Leupold VX-R Patrol. I plan to mount the scope on either an AR or Rem 700. My longest range is about 200 yds, but average is around 80 yds so either a 1x4 magnification or red dot would work. I've saved my pennies and would appreciate any advice or thoughts. Thanks!

I would take the patrol. At the low magnification it will be as fast as it needs to be on deer, which is to say it is best to wait for it to give you a decent shot. I do not like to swing on running game, so cranked up to 4x you will be able to pick your shot placement for a clean kill.

Of I were in your shoes I'd look at the leupold vxr or the vx-6. The 6 is mucho dinero but looks really great! I know you said 1-4 but the 6 looks good to me so I thought I'd mention it.

If you're shooting sub-200 yards pretty much anything (including open sights) will serve you just fine. I routinely run the Eotech on my AR-15 out to 200 yards. We're training for hunting 6 ft tall bipedal targets in an urban environment, and a 0-200 yard distance works out well when zeroed for 50 yards.

But, honestly, if you're going to drop this optic on a Rem 700, I'd be inclined to suggest you pick up a decent variable power scope that would allow you to take the distances out further, should you ever get the chance to play in such a manner. I had a Weaver Grand Slam Tactical 3-10x scope on my precision rifle for a while, and it worked great for the $300 price I paid through Midway. I used that scope for shots between 25-650 yards on a regular basis.

Now, if you're throwing this optic onto an AR-15, I am a pretty satisfied Eotech customer. Again, my application is not a game hunting application, but the optic would probably serve me just fine for a coyote sized target inside of 200 yards. The reticle is quick to acquire, leaves you with a maximized field of view, and the optic is durable.

As you already mentioned, if you're shooting at those distances you certainly don't need a ton (or any magnification). But, again, I just figure a precision rifle deserves an optic designed for that type of mission!

i would step up magnification to 2-7 or 3-9. I have a VX-R Firedot #4 and it is incredible for hunting low light or night hunting hogs. Take a look at Trijicon Accupoint as well, no batteries.

I'd skip the EoTech. I have one, and it works okay, but I think my Trijicon AccuPoint 1X-4X is a far better optic. I'd trade that EoTech in a heartbeat if I wouldn't take a financial beating on it, and buy an additional Trijicon AccuPoint 1-4.

Another vote for scoping it. Maybe a Minox 1.5-8X, giving you some additional magnification if needed. I've read that plenty of guys shoot quarter size groups at 200 yds. offhand with irons but I'm not one of 'em. If game is moving faster than you can sight in at 1.5X then it's moving too fast for a well placed shot, IMO.
