I was looking for a scope mount for my M1A and came across a story about the Google search engine filtering out firearms related search results and banning firearm ads. I don't know how accurate the filtering part is because I found this site via google. YMMV. More details can be found here http://www.bowmansbrigade.com/google1.htm

Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this post but I thought people might be interested.

The policy is common knowledge, but that case does a good job of exemplifying the sheer stupidity of it all. Clearly they didn't read either his emails or their own.

Sorry, my first message wasn't clear. They are actually refusing business from gun and knife advertisers. It's been a long day.

This is the first I've heard of it too.
(But it's not surprising considering Google's blossoming relationship with Aye?-Oh-welL...)

Well, I did 'firearms' and it returned no ads. I figured I'd give a few other searches a try, 'gay sex' returned two, 'pedophilia' 'man boy love' 'alcohol' and 'tobacco' returned none.

No I didn't click on the gay sex ads :D, nor does the skunk agree with pulling gay sex ads under political pressure.

I've never had a problem not finding anything with Google that I could with other engines. However, they do have a filter. Suppsoedly it only filters sexual content, but who knows what goes on in the minds of programmers.

Go to Google.com, click on the Preferences link on the right side (right under Advanced) and turn it off under "Safe Search" then click "Save Preferences".

it could be your ISP, I went to a friends house and any time I typed warez in a google search his browser would crash.

Google's search engine doesn't filter out results from firearms related searches. They simply reject advertising for firearms products and businesses. They don't accept advertising for tobacco products or businesses either. As someone mentioned in another Google thread that there may be many magazines and newspapers who do not accept advertising for firearms either.

Google is a good search engine. Actually Google is a great search engine. You can find plenty of gun info on it as well, you just wont find any commercial advertising that's gun related using it.

GET THE GOOGLE TOOL BAR!

Heh, heh.

I just discovered that if you install the Google Tool Bar, then uninstall it, it asks you for your comments so they can improve their service.

I sent them this:

"Your decision to refuse to accept advertising from the HIGHLY REGULATED and legal firearms industry is the reason I will now use other search engines, and will encourage others to do so."

Hmm, I just did a search for "shooting" and, in addition to pages (and pages...) of results, came up with an ad for Rifle Magazine.

And while we're at it, lets not forget to boycott the 1911 Forum for refusing to allow guns for sale posts in a highly regulated and entirely legal industry. Sheesh, who do they think they are.
