A few days ago, I asked my boss' permission to go camp at his ranch and hunt hogs (there are tons of 'em). To my surprise, he told me to look for one of his Black Buck Antelope that needed to be taken and shoot if I saw it! :what: Well, we found him last night :D

The picture is of me (right) and the ranch manager, who guided the hunt. We got him out in the open, with a clean kill from about 150 yards. He was walking with a few of the doe and stopped to look back at us. They walked a bit more and he turned back again. That was all I needed to squeeze off a 30-06 Silvertip. He went down hard and did not move after the shot.

This one was about 4 years old and the dominant male of the herd. They wanted him out of there because his horns weren't nearly as long as some of the others. He'll make a nice wall mount for my boss, and we're splitting the meat. I've heard they are pretty tasty!

This weekend will definitely be one to remember!

My daughter wants to shoot one of those so bad she can't stand it. We went on a doe hunt with TSRA to Uvalde, and one kept walking around in front of our blind. "Can I shoot it? Can I shoot it?" A friend of mine got to shoot one, because the rancher he knew saw it gore two of his whitetails at a feeder.

One of the most beautiful colored antelopes.....always wanted one, but the ranch wanted $1500 for a nice one.

Funny story - Last year, a guy who had never hunted anything in his life accidentally shot one of the doe thinking it was a whitetail  I figured the owner would be :cuss: but he was pretty cool about it. He did make the guy go sit in front of the breeder pens for awhile though, to get some better wildlife identification skills!

He's got a pretty nice ranch that's being built up to take care of his employees and clients. Several hundred acres that are about 60% wooded (thick brush) and nice big open grazing fields. While all the construction is going on, we can pretty much hunt/camp out there whenever as long as the manager knows we're coming. There are plenty of hogs, Whitetail, Axis, Fallow, Black Buck, and several trophy Elk now. Of course the exotics/regulated animals are normally off limits, but still plenty to see and go after year round. Another co-worker shot a nice bobcat last year and I hear coyotes all the time. Awesome job perk!

It's pretty cool when the critters come around. We camp out there pretty often, and the elk always seem to be the most curious. They'll "visit" our campsite late at night. Can't sleep inside the fence when the bulls/bucks are in the rut though!

Mostly just hogs and whitetail (although I haven't shot any deer since moving to Texas a few years ago). Tree rats are always easy and plentiful... Never gone after any birds, but turkey sounds like it would be fun. I'd like to try a coyote hunt sometime too.

Ever get down this way during duck season, I can introduce you to the salt marshes. :D It's public land, one of the few DECENT forms of hunting in Texas that can be done on public land. It's cheap, 15 bucks for a morning on a saturday.

The horns appear to have more weight than the mount I observed at CABELA's. The mass may not count for scoring as well as length, but still impressive.

Great shot! Thanks for sharing.

From what I was told, a buck that age should have had horns around 30" long. This one measured about 18" but he was still pretty handsome.
