Hopefully the pics posted.
I came home from Cabela's the other day with a M1 Carbine. Promised myself earlier I wouldn't walk away from another resonably priced one again. A couple questions, first does anyone know what kind mine is. The receiver has Springfield Armory stamped on it. I didn't know Springfield made them. A buddy of mine suggested someone put a Springfield receiver together with GI parts. Anyone think this sounds logical? Second, did I get an okay deal for $500? There's no gouges or anything in the receiver/barrel and only minor dings on the furniture. I haven't had the chance to shoot it yet due to the scarcity of 30 carbine ammo around here. I'm going to have to order some online, but I can't wait to shoot it.

Whoa, Cabelas HAS M1 Carbines? What condition, what price, is it all GI? There's a Cabelas about 2 hours from here, and if the CMP stuff doesn't turn out a decent price, off to Cabela's I go.

And no, your pictures didn't post. Try posting them as attachments from the file saved on your CPU--at least we can see the pics, then.

Your friend is exactly right. Springfield did not produce any USGI receivers. You have a commercial receiver. The Springfield recievers were pretty good. They are much better than Plainfield, Universal or Iver Johnson.

At $500 you got a fair deal on a shooter. It does not have much collector value because it is not a USGI reciever. Clean it up shoot it and enjoy.

Serial Number

If you have the serial number range, that would help.

Have a look at that list and see where your number falls.

And . . . ? What did you find?

His serial number will not be on thay list. He has a commerical M1 Carbine not a USGI.

No it means it was not made for the US government.

Some are mil spec others are not. If my memory serves me correctly the Springfield is Mil spec evidenced by it use in this parts gun.

When I researched and bought my IBM Carbine I only looked at USGI guns. I took my time a looked around and found a pretty nice one for $450 about 2 years ago.

If you are looking for a M1 carbine I would wait. CMP just got ton of surplus guns and will be selling them in March. Most people believe they will start around $500 for USGI parts guns and go up from there depending on collectors value.

That's interesting. Winchester invented the M1 Carbine, but Inland made SN 0000001

I knew Inland made the most of them, but I didn't know they made the first one.

Eightball,
I don't think Cabela's keeps M1 carbine's in stock. I got it off the used rack. Normally I haven't been very impressed with Cabela's, high prices, not a ton of selection compared to Impact Guns, and the staff haven't been very helpful. I just happened to see it for 500 and it was only on the shelf for a day. I passed up one for 400 at a pawn shop two years ago and said I'd never do that again.
ArfinGreebly,
The serial number is SC10453, I didn't see that on your list. Anyone know where I could look up where it came from?

S/N SC10xxx

That's not a military series number.

You seem to have an after-the-war commercial instance of the Carbine.

Do you have a friendly gunsmith that can give it a once-over?

Some of the "not-made-for-military" carbines were, in fact, made to the mil-spec, and are just fine. There are a couple of makers that did things that rendered theirs incompatible with the mil-spec parts list.

A good example is today's Auto Ordnance/Kahr version of the carbine which, if my sources are to be believed, is actually a mil-spec rendering.

See what you can do with that camera. If you've got photos, you can attach them using the paperclip icon (by the smilely icon) in the control bar when you write your post.

The local cabelas has many U.S. rifles on the rack- M1s, 1903s, 1903A3s, Krags, M1 carbines, Trapdoors, M1917s, and even a Johnson rifle- all overpriced. I saw a Century built M1 in the store the other day for $999:scrutiny:

Yeah,
I kick myself for not getting one for $400, but oh well. This one was in a lot better shape than the other one. I was probably looking at getting a new stock had I ponied up the money a couple years ago. My friends said they wouldn't have paid $500 but I figure the price for it will only go up and my dad and I have been keeping our eyes out for a Garand or a Carbine. I would've kicked myself forever passing up two Carbines.

Gotcher Fotos

I can see you now.

You will want to get in closer.

It looks like your rear sight is a ramped slider with windage adjust knob. This is the later sight design (type two and type three).

I can't make out whether your safety is the push-button type or the flip-lever type.

You have a bayonet lug, and I'm not sure how many commercial carbines had that.

Looks very nice from what you've posted so far.

So, show us some more . . . you know you want to . . .

Mine is a similar model (not USGI) but was made by Israeli Military Industries. It has been a good shooter. I put an UltiMak (scout mount) on it. The scout scope really helps with hits. It is lightening fast, I think faster than the iron sights. You will have to try several types of ammo in it to find the best for your gun. Mine percs just perfectly with WWB. I keep Winchester Hollow Soft Points for SD. They shoot to the same point of impact. that way I can practice with WWB cheap stuff and not have to rezero for SD loads. WWB is not available right now, but you can get S&B, Wolf, or Magtech. Remington JHP are virtually the same effectiveness as Winchester JHSP. Federal JHPs do not usually expand at all. CorBon makes an all copper bullet loading for the M1Carbine that will probably surpass all conventional loads

Serial numbers

I just compared the SN on my carbine to the list. SN218xxx, Inland Div. General Motors. Just like it says under the peep sight.

SIGH.....At one time they were very common in the used gun rack. I remember passing milspec carbines up @ $75.00ea because nobody wanted one. (Bigger sigh) Those were the days.:banghead:

Is that op rod made to a USGI pattern? I ask because I looked at several of these carbines last weekend, and they all had an angled suface in the portion of the op rod that curves over the bolt. This is the portion that has the cam that turns the bolt.

When I look at the photo with the bolt held back, it looks like this op rod has a surface that is exactly 90 degrees to the motion of the bolt, not maybe 30 or 40 degress like I saw at the gun show. My buddy thought maybe the angle portion served as a case deflector.

Anybody got a link to a close up of the GI op rod?

I cut and pasted these pictures to get a little closer. If it doesn't show enough I'll break down and take some more pics. I'm sorry I can't answer most of your questions about it being that I know almost next to nothing about the M1 carbine. It does have a push button saftey though.

Would anyone have any qualms about using wolf in their carbine? I've found a place I can get 1000 rounds for under $200. Before I do that I'll get several different boxes and see what it likes. I also found some cheap copper bullets. Anything wrong about using these?

I tried Wolf in mine. 50 rounds, 1 fte.

I tried S&B in mine. 50 rounds, all kinds of ftf's

I found that milspec works best so far. Good thing I know where another 1020 rounds are.

Been saving brass, reloading 110 gr hp from speer.

Will have to repeat Ammo tests in the one I just got though. The wolf was the older stuff, not the stuff that has a different coating. If I ifnd the new stuff I will give it a try as well.

Get GI mags. They seem to work best for some reason. Aftermarkets are a crap shoot. 15 rounders seem a bit more reliable for some reason as well.

jwalk shoot good ammo like Georgia Arms .30 carbine last time I ordered 50rds FMJ $10.00 . 50rds soft point $14.00 shipping extra.I only use Wolf in my AK 47 or SKS.
