Got a Sig p229!

Well after everyone talked me into keeping my 1911, someone offered me a p229 in .40 S&W, and I bought it! I was already thinking about buying a p220 or a p226 but when I had a p229 sitting in front of me for a decent price with ammo I just couldn't resist. So far I really like it, I have not shot it yet but I have taken it apart many times and handled it a lot getting familiar with it. The quality is top notch and the coiled recoil spring is a nice touch. The only that I don't like is that I have to change my grip to reach the decocker. You all have any suggestions for the gun? I'm thinking about trying it in IDPA for fun, do you all think it will do alright if I do my part? I know its not idea but its probably the best suited pistol I have for it. Looking forward to the suggestions :cool:
 
I bought a 229 recently as well (a week ago), but I've still got a few more weeks before I get the paperwork so i can pick it up. :(
 
I was looking into getting an IDPA gun and was recommended a 229 Elite by a current competitor... I love mine (haven't started IDPA yet...).
 
What's different about the p229 elite? The only thing I can see is the wood grips and beaver tail. The only real complaint I've heard about the p229 is the trigger reset. I'm not a double action trigger expert but it seems fine just playing with it, and the single action trigger is great.
 
I carried one for many years as a duty weapon. First class gun. Good choice.
 
What kind of accuracy can I expect out of it? I know it will only do as good as the person shooting it but I'm not really sure what to expect with the shorter barrel compared to my 1911.
 
The Sig 229's are very accurate. I have one in 357 sig/40 S&W. I can consistently hit a soda can at 35 yards with mine.

Which caliber shoots better for you, 357 sig or .40 S&W? I might buy a .357 sig barrel down the line and try them out.

Edit: never mind, I just looked at the price of 357 sig ammo. I WON'T be using any :eek:
 
i'm guessin he has better luck with the .357Sig. it has flatter trajectory than .40

good buy on the Sig, if it's anything like the P228, you'll be very happy :)
 
I have a couple of P229's in 357SIG. I also have a spare .40 barrel. If you buy in bulk, 357SIG costs the same as the .40. While the .40 is accurate, I find I shoot the 357SIG better. Either way, you cant go wrong.

I usually decock mine using the thumb on my left hand. It sits just forward of it when I shoot, and the decocker is easily and naturally reached and used.
 
I never thought about using my left thumb for the take de-cocker. I just tried that and it works pretty well, just feels strange. Is your all's take down lever flat or does it have a bump or ridge on it? Mine is completely flat.
 
Mine have a small, smooth ridge or bump at the bottom with some serrations above it.
 
Sig must have used two different take down levers then. I'm going to try to buy the one bump on it, I just like it better.

Using the decocker is an administrative function. It is not a gun fight function. Therefore, it is secondary to the first consideration.

Accuracy is awesome. It's a real tack driver in 40; the 357 SIG barrel is capable of REALLY small groups.

It doesn't matter. Just a preference thing. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the sig so far.
 
I bought a CPO unit with the DAK trigger and both .40 and .357Sig barrels. Go buy yourself some Hogue grips and you'll really fall in love with it.

Sounds like the only modification you need to make is to buy more ammo :)
 
Got a 229 elite a couple of mos ago - love it - by far the best .40 I've ever shot.

Very fast acquisition and accuracy if, IMHO, you get some combat, 2-dot sights, (-= -) >> as between the 3 of my P229's, the 40cal with them is my main gun, and with those 2 simple white dots, she's dead-on accurate when they align, fast, naturally.

The other 2 P229's have 3-dot, (= -) >> night sights, and even though they're good, they can't compare with the 1-dot combat sights IMO.

All my ammo is 180gr btw, least amount of recoil with them, and they continue to amaze me with how soft shooters they are, with the fast, return-balance, on target, of these guns..

Also, with that one, I put in a Wolff 17lb main spring, making the DA sweet, along with a easy, clean, SA pull.. 1400 flawless rounds with it, thus far, no light strikes.

Ps.. on the "change of grip to decock the gun".. with practice, DA pull, decock, DA pull, decock, full mag or more, per range visit, you'll quickly find the sweet spot and be able to do it, in the blind, without loss of your 2-hand grip..
