Don't get too mad at me because I haven't found a deal on a revolver in about three years but I just found another. As some of you may remember, I lucked into a nice Colt Agent at the last gunshow I got for $175 + tax IIRC.
Well, I went to a gunshop today and I saw a nice old S&W pre-36 .38spl snubby. It had the very end of the hammer bobbed for some reason. It looks as if about 1/2 of the serrated part was cut off. I don't see why someone would do this as it barely changes the profile for the hammer but what do I know? On one cylinder in SA, the hammer is really hard to cock. It is a burr, I am sure but I have to find it. Other than that, it is pretty nice. It original finish and original grips and looks nice. It is not mint but it was not dragged behind a car and left out in the rain or anything. It has some honest wear but it is the kind of wear that comes from carrying not from abuse. I woud rate the finish as about 80-85% and overall it is a pleasing sort of wear if you know what I mean.
Anyway, now for the kicker. I saw the price tag was only $200 and I knew I was going to be buying it. When I asked to handle it, I noticed the above problems and I used them to get the guy to give the gun to me for $175+tax! I was going to pay the $200 for this fine old flat latch but I thought I would try to haggle. I was polite as I do a lot of business with them and they tend to treat me well. I simply asked if the price had any wiggle room and the guy came up the $175 price on his own. I was pleased.
So, just so you guys don't think I run into deals like this all the time, the last good revolver deal I found besides the Colt was at least three years ago on a S&W 19 with no grips. I gave $300 for it and it is one of my favorite guns I own. It had a set of fake pearl grips with it but the guy wanted $375 for the package. He said te grip were worth $75 so I said I would take the gun without the grips for $300. To my surprise, he agreed! I didn't want the AJAX fake pearl grips anyway.
One quick question for you S&W guys out there, I was wondering what year it was made. The SN# is 799XX. It is a flat latch with no model number and the small round butt frame. It has the normal sized trigger guard not the small one. It does have the diamond grips.
