As you are quickly finding out, there are almost as many different methods of cleaning as there are shooters. Incidently, you will also find that some of those shooters are adamant about their particular method being the best.
Find what works for you!! Everybody has their personal preferences, some include, WD-40, Canola Oil, Hoppes #9 and even Windex. My personal preference is Ballistol mixed 1:1 with water in what is referred to as "Moose Milk". It will absorb into Black Powder residue and just let it slide off with a patch. Also the Ballistol is "slightly" alkaline so that it will neutralize the acidic residue of Black Powder.
I use the Moose Milk on barrels and all cartridge guns including smokeless. My CB cylinders normally get dunked in a bowl of hot water and Dawn to soak while I do the barrels and frames because I can't get a brush all the way through them. Then a small bottle brush to hit the chambers with, dry and Ballistol straight for lubrication and corrision protection.
Again, find what works best for your application. Check your work within a couple of weeks. If you find rust, switch to a different method and repeat.
