Went to the Richmond Va gun show yesterday and picked up a 1954 FR8 Spanish Mauser.
She has been wanting her own knock around bolt gun and I have always liked the FR8.
Came with scope and mounts... $262
Not too bad of a deal.

That's a good deal. Too bad the original rear sight was ground off. How does the bolt-handle look where it was turned-down?

My FR-8 kicks a bit. If you reload it's a moot point, but if you don't, your wife might try the Federal Fusion or Remington "reduced recoil" .308win - 170gr has ballistics similar to .30-30 or 7.62x39.

Bolt handle doesnt look bad.
The wife loves shooting my Nagant... and said my .45-70 needs more punch.
I think she will be fine with factory .308s. ;)

good job with the turned bolt. The FR8 with a straight bolt is a horrible design because of the location of the rear site and the propensity of the user to tear up his hand when operating the bolt.

what´s not to like?!

for 262$ i´d pick that up, too.

no 2A here :( .. more money for beer ...

cool stick, Mister.

It looks as if the wood grain will stand out quite nicely after a little sanding and linseed oil! Very nice find.

Yea, will be refinishing and more than likely going with a scout scope style mount.
The existing mount just flat blows.
It is only secured at the front, and I had to stop and remove the scope while shooting it today and retighten the mount.
Also, the scope adjustment is maxed out down and to the left.
However I DID get it to where it was about minute of paint can @ 150 yards.
I am satisfied with that... with the sketchy mount and adjustment.
The wife loves it... no recoil issues and likes the steel butt plate... keeps it nice and short for her.

I may need my own now :D

I never thought I would even think twice about .308 recoil...
However its impressive, as is the blast and noise.
Honestly think more so than my M44.
She is VERY pleased with it.
Since Wifey is happy... I am happy :D

You can still purchase 50 training rounds (German manufactured, 10gr plastic slug at over 4000 FPS) for $8. It has plenty of blast and report and puts the holes in the same place, but with almost no recoil. I plan to use it to initiate new shooters.
As long as it's treated as "real" ammunition, it makes a great alternative for those who appreciate the fun and not the bruised shoulder.

I've recently purchased some and I've been impressed so far.
$7.99/50 at SOG

I think it would be pretty neat to put a Hensoldt for the HK91/G3 on it. Unfortunately the price has gone up as availability has declined though at least you could probably sell the claw mount for $50-70 as it would be unneeded.

The FR8 is one of my favorite bolt rifles and I almost bought another one a couple weeks ago but couldn't quite justify the $ that the seller was asking.
