Was out at gun show today and stumbled across s&w 629 with 6 inch barrel in very good shape. I always wanted 44 for deer hunting and occasional carry/truck gun in my arsenal. Payed $515 for it and came with box and whole 9 yards.
I'm totally new to 44 mag and was wondering what you guys think about B. Bore 270 grain Speer Uni-core for deer hunting with this gun? Would it be "ok" to shoot 50 rounds a year out of that gun? If not what would you recommend for hunting ammo and carry ammo for that gun.

Jeeping,
Congrats on the 44, but you are in a lot more trouble if she reads your post script  (some judicious editing might be in order;)).
Regards,
Greg

You need to explain to her that these guns use to sell for $300.00 or so just a short while back. In 3 years it will be worth $100.00 to $200.00 dollars more unless you panic and need cash and take the first low ball offer you get.

My wife use to say the same thing to me. She doesn't anymore. I've sold a few guns and every time i do i at least get my money back or most often make a small profit. A couple of times i've made a large profit. I always make a point to tell her when i make a little money on a gun. Plus i got to shoot them the whole time i owned them.

Keep any box or paperwork.

If all else fails how comfortable is your couch?

I got her to calm down a little. The whole thing about how i didn't spend the 500 but rather "invested" went very well. Good advice Ratshooter. Now as a bonus to my new gun, I get to go to a fancy japanese restaurant on Friday and probably drop another 150:rolleyes:.
I'm not sleeping on the couch tonight though.:D

Nice gun! I have a 686 and if I ever come across a good deal on a 629 I will get one to keep the 686 company.

As far as your wife goes, try doing a monthly budget together. In the budget set aside $50 a month for gun stuff. You can take out the money in cash every month or put it in your savings account and keep track of it. If at anytime you want to buy a gun you won't feel bad because you both agreed that the money was set aside for a gun.

My wife and I agreed that our bonus or side work money was for whatever we wanted. It has worked out well in our 17 years of marriage. :D

Hi,

That's the perfect toting size for a .44 Magnum hunting revolver! Anything any longer is cumbersome, and except for the 5" variety (which is rare) the 4" version gives up too much in lowered velocity and reduced sight picture IMHO for an "ultimate" all-round whitetail harvester!

It rides comfortably, all day, in a belt holster, and is also easy to tote in your hand when desired.

TELL YOUR WIFE . . .

Tell your wife that your new Smith will be saving lots of money each year in grocery costs due to the deer you'll be bagging with it! HAVE YOU PRICED GROCERIES LATELY?

Naturally, she may bring up other reasons but, in the end, that wheelgun will bring you a lot of joy and she'll be glad you got it!

Mine is a late 1989 Model 29 S&W .44Mag., topped with an early Bushnell Holosight. I've bagged SCORES of deer through the years with it, including twice where I got THREE in mere seconds! Those kind of memories are priceless!

HEAVY BULLETS IN A MODEL 29 OR 629? Like your 629, my M29-5 was a -5 version with the beefed up parts. You'll probably wear yourself out before you wear your 629 out shooting heavy bullets for hunting!

Heck, I use the hot Federal 300 grain "Castcore" hardcast, flat nose bullets in mine and have for the past ten seasons or so. The wheelgun is still as tight and accurate as ever. Heck, if I ever wear it out, I'll get another Smith .44mag!

Here's mine, resting on the hide of a Piebald buck I harvested a couple of seasons ago with this gun and load. Ahhhh . . . the precious memories. Can't wait 'till NEXT season!

T.

PS: Yep, the 6" Smiths ride quite well in a belt holster. Here's my cheap Uncle Mike's rig, with the holster front modified to also securely cradle my Holosight. I've been up and down trees hundreds of times without incident through the years. Be glad you didn't get a longer barrel.

YEW DUN GOOOD!

Thanks for all the input guys.
S&Wfan that's a nice set up you got there. What kind of gripps are those?

Tell her to be happy you spent $515 instead of $900 (as I did on my 629 stainless 5 months ago).

My old lady got REALLY mad when I dropped $1100 on a new Rock River AR-15 and another $580 on a Leupold Tactical II a few weeks ago.

As soon as I get out of the doghouse I'm getting the Harris bipod for it...and a dozen roses.

By the way 300 Grain cast cores from Federal are my hunting round of choice.
