Okay, so I got my reimbursement check along with an overdue paycheck for a freelance job of a considerable dollar amount. Most of this is going into savings, some I'm sending to my mother to help her out, but I would like to get myself and my girlfriend something nice before all of this.

I already know what I'm getting my girl, but my problem is what I want for myself. Here's where you guys come in, and I'm sure you know where I'm going with this. I need advice on my next gun...

I've recently purchased a Ruger GP100, so I have my revolver for the time being (until I decide it's time for a new one). With that out of the way, I've been debating between what pistol I should get myself. I've been leaning towards the XD. Not sure which model I would like yet.

There's no concealed carry here, obviously, so this will probably spend most of its time next to my GP on the night stand. Should I get a service model or a compact? I've been able to fire the XD .40 sub-compact at the range a while ago and found it alot more comfortable than the USP and Glock 26. Is there a difference in accuracy between the two larger models? Also, what would be the ideal ammo type? Is there much of a difference between .40 and .45?

I'm open to suggestions, I still have to take my ruger to the range one more time to try to reproduce an issue I had. While I'm there I might as well rent a pistol or two.

A longer slide gives you a longer sight radius, theoretically better for accuracy.

Since you're limited to 10-rd mags, I'd go for .45. Solid round and a variety of loads available. My friend who carries a .45 is partial to Hornady TAP FPD, I believe in 200gr +P.

The XD is a good gun, but I'd look at the S&W M&P since they have the $50 rebate plus 2 free mag offer going on.

It really depends largely on the amount. If you can afford it, get a Les Baer 1911, 1,000 rounds of ammo, and maybe some first class shooting instruction.

If you have money left and are not reloading, yet, you might consider getting a reloading set-up.

When I first tried them out, I preferred the XD9 to the G17. Since then, I've come to prefer the G19 over both.

I had a chance to fire the XD45 a few months back. While I didn't like the trigger, I will have to say that it was comfortable to shoot and made a tidy group at ~20 yards.

Since "carry" is out, I wouldn't jack with any compact or subcompact stuff. I would go the opposite way. Look at the XD tactical - that 5" barrel gives you a nice, long sight picture for better accuracy and - theoretically, at least - the longer barrel should give more out-front weight for faster follow-up shots.

Nothing wrong with a good 1911, either. But before I would drop $1200 on any gun, I would buy a good one for half that money (like an XD or MP) and then put a chunk of change down on ammo & range time. Learn how to make that "average" gun do above average work!!! Having a Super-Duper Whiz-Bang pistol, but not being able to afford to shoot it doesn't do a whole lotta good.

Hrm, I'd like to take a deeper look into the M&P line, can you guys recommend a good model? We Californians are limited to 10 round mags for pistols, if it means anything.

You might consider some good gear or accessories.

Exotic wood grips from Hogue or another aftermarket
supplier of grips.

A deluxe cleaning kit with the brass rods - they're $20-$25
at Cabelas. Cabelas also has range bags, as well as aluminum cases
comparable to Pelicans.

How about some speedloaders for your GP100 or top
quality extra magazines for whatever semi-auto you
decide on.

How about a triiger/action job on your GP100?

Or a middle market quality 1911 you could get a trigger
job or accessorize / modify to your liking, personalize it so
it's not like every other stocker ?
Say a Bar Sto barrel and trigger/action job,

Even if you can't carry concealed you could
get a open carry holster for range/field excursions?

Or some quality screwdrivers and other tools

Lots of possibilities
.

Speed loaders are definitely on the list, I'm probably going to pickup a few. Grips are also on the list as well, if anything I'm going to grab the Hogues (if they fit well). Maybe some inserts if I don't get the Hogues. I'd like something to put on the front sight for better night view as well.

With the pistol I'm going to have 3 mags minimum and I would prefer it to have a rail for accessories.

FYI.

If you buy a S & W 1911 between Nov. 1, 2007
and Jan 15 2008, S & W will send you a Detonics
Holster and mag pouch free after verified sale.
