Rshooter: I personally have seen a combative, non intoxicated subject litterally wipe the pepper spray that was dripping off his face (two of us each with a solid 2 second burst), and then proceed to smile. Dude just had a really high pain tolerance, and was very determined. It was a heck of a fight to get him in cuffs, but we pulled it off without anyone needing to go to the hospital. Would have tased the guy but his clothing was to heavy to be able to get good probe hits.

Basically he had found the guy his wife had left him for. We showed up before he and the other guy could get into it. I don't know if he was determined to go through us to the other guy, or just get it on with somebody. We certainly accomadated him if it was the later. A fellow officer of mine, has the dash cam of himself and another officer delivering ASP strikes to the thighs of a drunk, until the shafts bent. They then went hands on and got cuffs on. Apparently the drunk had significant bruising but nothing else, it's why my expandable baton is a winchester, and even then used mainly for door knocking.
