...this time I'm in the market for an ak-47 or what I've seen widely referred to online as ak-variants. I already have a Colt AR-15 carbine length with the removable carry handle and figured why not get an AK as well. Thing is, I know absolutely nothing about ak's or variants, and thus am seeking some more knowledgeable personnel on the subject. Not even sure what companies in the US manufacture ak-type rifles all I know is I'd like it to be black (no wood for me) chambered in 7.62, have a milled receiver and prefer a carbine length (full length will be considered if the other 2 prerequisites are fulfilled). I don't even know how much they run; a buddy of mine has an Arsenal M-7 I believe that he paid $600 for a few years back with a milled receiver. I checked out their website and many if not all of their models (particularly the ones I was interested in) are either out of stock, limited production, or discontinued (or a combination of the above 3). Someone point me in the right direction; I am willing to spend up to as much as I did for my AR (around $1200). Any suggestions, advice, and input are appreciated. Thanks in advance!

There is a ton on info on AR15.com and the theakforum.net. If you want a milled gun Arsenal is probably your best bet and there are some for sale on both boards. Or you could go crazy and get a VZ-58 (AK improved). However I would not get to worried about milled or not milled the stamped guns are also great. Good luck and enjoy your AK.

Ps...If you need 7.62 ammo I have some for sale, PM if interested.

Saiga all the way.
223., 7.62X39 or 308. I think that just started importing 5.45. Don't know why, but they are doing it. Would rather see the 7.62X54, but what do I know.

I would also recommend the Saiga.

You can get whatever caliber you want...and custom convert it to fit YOU. A nice folding stock for it will cost around $160 and the conversion parts themselves will be $160 as well.

Please don't say "assault rifle" in public.

Seriously, it doesn't help us.

"Military style" or something like that doesn't scare people, and guns get banned because they are scary and mean.

My $.02, worth what you paid for it, but I am really impressed with this rifle. One thing it is NOT, is an AK. Looks like one, totally differant operating system.

You know, it is funny to hear that term "Assault Rifle" always being thrown around, as if it either a badge of honor, or equal to dropping the F bomb.

There are no real assault rifles, they can all be used to "assault".

Drop $400 on the saiga

Check out the conversion instruction video on Vimeo

Check out the thousands of different options

Do not put rails or scopes or other mall ninja crap on it

Put another $200-300 into that and have a beautiful, custom built AK

If you need any help feel free to PM me
