GP100 trigger job? Compare with S&W?

Hello all, I have a 4" SS GP100 that I will like to improve the tigger on. I have put a couple thousand round through it and dryfired at least that many times. The DA pull is pretty smooth, though heavy. The SA is pretty heavy and there is some creep as well.

This is my do all gun; beside gun, plinker, target, hunting etc. I'm not looking for the lightest DA pull, as I don't want to sacrifice reliability in defense situations. I would however like a lighter DA pull and primarily a very crisp and light SA pull.

I recently shot a couple 686s; one was crap, but the other was incredible. The SA trigger was ultra crisp and very light. I could shoot way better with it than my GP100. I know the smiths are known for better out-of-the-box tiggers, but can a GP100 be made as good? If so, would any reputable gunsmith be able to do the job, or should a "ruger specialist" do it? I live right near Bain & Davis; I have heard good things about them. And lastly, how much should i expect to pay for such a job?

Hi,

Overall, the GP100 is a fine revolver! However, you'd probably be better off trading or selling your GP for a Smith that you find with an already incredible trigger.

The S&W action is designed differently and I really don't believe the Ruger system can yield as smooth and light of a DA pull as a non-J frame S&W.

I find out-of-the-box single action trigger pulls on Ruger revolvers to be generally inferior to S&W's. Part of the reason has too do with legal liability, and another part of it is that Ruger's hammers and triggers are softer then those in Smith & Wesson's that are case hardened. Some Smith's have leaf mainsprings that also contribute toward the S&W "feel."

That said, a pistolsmith that's good at doing Ruger's can substantially improve the weight and crispness of the S.A. pull in a Ruger. Equaling the double action found in older Smith & Wesson products is difficult at best.

Bain & Davis are among the best. You would have to ask them about the cost, but if you really prefer the Ruger revolver over a Smith & Wesson I believe you'd find their work to be worthwhile.

Gemini Customs made my SP-101 trigger better than any Smith I've ever owned. They work on the GP as well.

I've yet to find one with a trigger pull like a Smith, but I'm not going to discount the work of a good gunsmith. There might be one that can do it.

A friend of mine has one that he's done a little bit of work on and I wouldn't be disappointed with it one bit. It's not a Smith, but it's comfortable. He doesn't have a whole lot of gunsmithing experience, either.
