Many thanks to Bob and Jim for all the help on my grandfathers (and soon to be mine!) old relvolver.

It looks like we narrowed it down to a Smith & Wesson Hand ejector 2nd model. The serial number is somewhere around 1930 and it's a 61/2 fixed sight in high 90s condition.The grips are non medallion and also in excellent contition.

My father has the firearm and I want to give him what is a fair price for the firearm. So far the feedback is it's worth on or about $1000. Can this be true? I wanted to get out for less.

I think $1,200 to $1,500 would be more realistic. Give your old man $1000 for it and you guys should both end up happy.

If the stocks are original and the revolver being in a high 90% condition I think $1000 would be a steal. If your father let you have it for less then he is either being really nice to you or just doesn't have any idea of what it's worth. Pre-war S&W N-frames are not cheap.

Sounds about right.

Couple of months ago, I saw a late 2nd HE .44 in about 80% go for $650. This was a deal between two friends, and the buyer felt the seller made him a very nice deal.

When my father passed his guns to me he only got a "thank you". That's all I'll ask when I pass them (and the ones I've purchased) on to my sons. YMMV

Granpa gave it to Dad which makes it priceless in my book. If he is giving it to you, why the monetary exchange? It is worth about what you have been told, but you are in California, does the California Can't Have List govern something that old and would that factor to a higher price locally.

Ca does not limit transfer of handguns over 50 years old.I have a 95% late 2nd model .44 spl and it is worth round a thousand. I wouldn't sell it.
