"Dude, I know you just got hit in the head, but look, we have no sterile rinse left. I know, I know, hold on, ZZZZIIIPPPPP, AHHHHHHHHHH" There Lenny, you feel better?"

:D :p

lolol.....first post that has made me laugh in a while. Good one!

A great survival book (as opposed to wide spread SHTF/TEOTWAWKI) is "Testament" by David Morrell.

My friends father got shrapnel in his leg during Nam. Hid dad was in WW2 and his grandad was in WW1. Well both told him to piss on his wounds if he got wounded. He has a little limp but the dacs said If he didn't do what he did they would have had to amputate.

Oh BTW always fluch the toilet after you clean it with chlorine. If someone pisses in it after the fumes burn like hell.

Also try "No Blade of Grass", set in Britain following a plague which kills off all grass-type plants worldwide (meaning, no wheat, grazing, ergo no cattle or many other critters or foodstuffs).....VERY good book. It sure wouldn't work in today's Britain, with the almost complete removal of guns from the populace.

This book effectively makes the point that it doesn't necessarily take nuclear weapons to imperil our existence.

I just finished the first chapter of "Earth Abides" by George Stewart. It's about a pandemic that kills off nearly everyone and is so far pretty entertaining.

+1 Earth Abides is a pretty under-rated book, IMO, but that might be because it was out-of-print for a long time. It is probably the best PA book I have read so far. (I am just starting LH by Niven and Pournelle, though.)

I also really enjoyed Postman, Footfall, Pulling Through, The Stand, and Folk of the Fringe.

Online, I enjoyed Lights Out and Raptorman.

Talking about people's teeth rotting out from the lack of toothpaste and floridated water, etc.

You solve that by rinsing you're mouth with urine. The Ammonia kills the bacteria. Gross, but it works.

Should a giant meteor, whatever, end life as we know it, the first thing I'm going to construct will be a still.

I just installed ceiling fans, so this book about the risks of throwing feces at them should make for an excellent read.

Funny... I just got through boxing one up for banishment to the basement... The master bedroom looks much more tranquil with a nice normal light fiixture now...

My recommendation: Hit flea markets, etc., and buy an older set of encyclopedias... Buy the Foxfire books. Look for "how to" stuff. Old chemistry stuff is cool too...

Humm...

Perhaps using the bed for a trampoline and getting 13 stitches in my head when I was young makes me think a bit different on defining "Serious Situations" and why I "Think Outside the Box" as I do. My reading :

US Constitution
Civil Disobedience
1984
Animal Farm
Gulag Archipelgo
One Day in the life of Ivan Dongovich
Plum Island
The Pillars Of The Earth
Atlas Shrugged
Montana Sky ( don't laugh even if by Nora Roberts)

Various works from Brister, Ruark,Jordan, Skeeter...toss in some Army/ Military FMs and survival guides including what bugs/plants to eat, navigation,...add more stuff on using a compass, making fires, finding/ getting/ making water safe to drink...first aid, hunting, fishing... and I never finished up on how to pick locks and hot-wire vehicles...by-pass alarms I learned a little about being a victim.

Just stuff I wanted to learn , still want to learn from folks whom have BTDT, political matters, and general common everday stuff I may / have found useful in life.

As much a I cuss MS...well, learning to use a PC, do a word doc, internet, and email and such - I can use this tool for the crap that is about to hit on taking my freedoms away and fight tyranny with.

I must have really hit my head hard, took a pc of wood off the headboard, broke skin ( duh...stitches) skull not cracked tho' :)

OK, how is it that nobody has mentioned Halffast's "Lights Out" which was posted here on THR in this thread http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=96152

I mentioned it 3 posts previous to yours.

And some folks might not consider online fiction as relavant, since in Halffast's powerless Texas, no one would be able to read his book.

(Here's hoping he gets it into print, soon.)

Where can I get practical survivalist books not novels. Manuals books on more advanced first aid. I haven't been able to find something that gives good instructions on how to get the useable meat from an alligator. After this past year I'd like to learn some more practical stuff in case I do get pounded by a bad hurricane.

The Foxfire books mentioned here are instructional. They aren't novels.

Here's a link or two

Alligator? Why would you mess with a dangerous animal that's to dumb to realize it's dead, when you are walking though a cournicopia of edible plants every day?

Well alligators are very plentiful here. The S has to HTF in a big way for me to look into that option. But you have a good I'll have to find an edible plant book to. I would like to go gator hunting before SHTF.
