This is a great website that helped me figure out everything I needed to know about my mystery SKS. So I just figured I'd share it with the fellow THR guys, but you probably already know of it.

Turns out that my SKS was manufactured by China Jin An (CJA) and imported right here in Springfield, Michigan. Oddly enough CJA tends to be the only company that doesn't have the "Type 56 Carbine" stamped on the receiver like all the other Chinese SKS'

Nope, site lists it as Springfield and my receiver is stamped with Springfield, MI. No I'm not mixing it up with the Simpsons haha.

Well that's odd. Information I've seen points towards Southfield, and mine is also stamped Southfield MI, with CJA being the importer.

Well then, CJA must have had two places of importing. SKS' were huge back then I don't doubt it. However, I'm having an awful time installing my Tapco 20rnd magazines that have convinced me to never buy guns involving battle plastic.

Most of these companies switch locations and changed names as often as the seasons changed. The biggest problem is not even the BATF kept a record of all of them.

Lets compare notes here. Mine has a 16" barrel. Spike bayonet. Cleaning rod. No cleaning kit. A rail attached to the rear cover. A thick recoil pad. The guy I bought it off of thinks he has the original rear cover somewhere. Although he might have got it like that. Recoil pad, I have no idea. Import markings say: SKS 7 62 MADE IN CHINA and then underneath CJA SFLD, MI. Factory marks are 26 in the triangle, and 3 Chinese symbols next to that. I'm pretty sure SFLD stands for Southfield. Every google search I've done I always get hits for Southfield.

this is awesome. Actually it turns out my '51 Tula Russian was completely original, and had never been refurbished or re-blued, Well, untill I gave it a complete makeover in school. Maybe that's why it's been such a great shooter.
