Just passin through!
Hi all, just wanted to let you all know that I had a great trip to visit my brother and his wife in Springfield. I brought a few of my handguns and my brother and I managed to bring his anti gun wife over to our side. Though it started very shaky...
I carried in MO from the time I got out of the airport till I got back into the airport. Only my brother knew I did. The first night there I changed into shorts and tee for sleep and she noted my gun in the holster on the dresser. She says "WHAT IS THAT??" I said what does it look like Es??? She huffed and mumbled she didn't like it and walked away. From that moment on if it wasn't concealed on me it was in my gun case which I unlocked only after we went to bed and left open by my bed.

She had numerous bad experiences with guns by way of her family members. No training just shove a gun in your hand and go. They have guns cause it makes em cool etc etc. blah blah blah...
We had a long talk after dinner the next day, regarding as she put it "My facination with guns". I explained it was not a facination that I had good reason for carrying, starting out with the fact that it is my right. Gave a short oration on Second Amendment rights, letting her know that I was an activist back home in Illinois and very concerned about my and family's safety. She mentioned that was what the police were for....I stated that the police can not protect everyone every minute of the day and you alone were ultimately responsible for your safety. We talked about the horrific brutality of a violent breakin and how by the time the police arrive on the scene there is not much more to be done than take historical notes and collect evidence of the crime.
I asked her what she was so afreaid of....She stated that guns are dangerous and they scared her. I said she was absolutely correct. Then asked her if my brother was working with a circular saw in the garage and asked her to assist would she be afraid of the circular saw? She of course said yes. I asked why..she said it's dangerous. I said you are absolutely correct.....
I told her guns like any other tools need to be respected for the danger that is inherent in them. Improper handling will get you or someone near you seriously hurt.
My SIL then mentioned about what happened the night before when she saw my gun on the dresser...and that she noticed it was not there again and asked why. I explained that since it upset her and I was staying in her house I would keep it out of sight whether it was locked in the case or concealed on my person. She softened a bit and said thanks...that was something her family was unwilling to do. She had mentioned that guns scare her and they laughed it off but continued to have them out in plain sight anyway.

I got up and removed the gun she saw the night before from the holster on my hip, she got all nutso and said what are you doing??
I said you had bad experiences previously, because of poor or no training.
I said watch.... and handed my brother, (who himself is a fairly new to firearms) the firearm. Once he had the firearm in hand he pointed the weapon away from all, dropped the mag and cycled the slide 3-4 times then handed the weapon back to me. I checked the magwell, and again cycled the slide 3-4 times. She looked quizzically at me and asked why after Chris checked it I did it again...I said...Rule # 1...All guns are loaded...Always! Never assume that one is not. Don't take
anybody's word for it. Don't take my word and I won't take yours. Don't
rely on, or trust any manual safety.
She was fairly impreseed. She had, in all the experiences by way of her family never seen anyone do such a thing. I then asked her to explain the worst experience...(I knew of it as my brother was p.o'd after a visit awhile back and had told me about it). At what they called the annual family shoot out, she was handed a .22 rifle (loaded) not having handled a firearm she naturally took it with her finger in the trigger and drilled a round who knows where to the laughter of her family....
I said Rule # 2...Keep your finger clear of the trigger until you intend for the gun to fire. If you want to fire the gun, pull the trigger. If you don't...don't.
I then asked where did the bullet go?? She said I have no idea ....Rule # 3, Don't point the gun at anything that you don't want to see destroyed, crippled, or killed. That includes parts of your own body. Especially, don't point it at me. If you do, I won't be kind.
Rule # 4 Be sure of your target and what is behind it or beyond it. Never fire at anything that you don't visually identify and qualify as a target. Don't fire at sounds or movements.
I mentioned that one of my on line friends.... (Tuner) has rule # 5...The pistol on your belt is not your friend, and it's not a toy. If you want a toy, go buy a video game. If you want a friend, get a dog.
The pistol on your belt is as dangerous as a Timber Rattlesnake, and should be regarded as hostile at all times. Nuff said...

She started to get the idea I really knew what I was doing and wasn't some gun toting reckless cowboy interested in a gunfight or waiting to shoot something.....
I had her handle the firearm empty of course...I told and showed her how and why it worked. Showed her the safeties and explained all the parts. She was starting to show genuine interest and tha bark in her voice was gone. She then asked if I would show and explain my other handguns. To which I of course said yes. When I came back with my case she was all eyes and ears....my brother was smiling from ear to ear....When she saw the GP141 she said hey I know that gun...it's a 357 magnum....my dad used to carry one on duty...She handled all of the guns I brought ....everytime either my brother or I coached her on the 4 +1 rules....By the time we were done 3 and a half hours had gone by and she wanted to go with us in the morning to the range.
The next day she was not quite so enthused as the night before but we had breakfast and headed out....We shot darn near 800 rounds of ammo.
She was so excited...and enjoyed shooting very much. I brought my DW 1911, Ruger GP141, Bersa Thunder .380 and my CZ52. My SIL liked shooting the 45 and really fell for the .380. She's a little thing and it fit real nice for her. She also shot the Ruger but didn't much care for the recoil...She was talking about them even getting a gun for home since my brother is frequently out of town. I joked, yeah watch what's gonna happen....you guys are gonna get guns, then some training and then your carry permits... And I can't....
Anyway, we shot at a state owned 3-4 lane unmanned outdoor range but we either went early or later in the day so it wasn't being used. Brought all kinds of stuff to shoot too after cleaning out my brothers garage...
