Where ever the good LORD puts me.
Thinking of getting a police trade in 17 or 22 and grip chopping to a 19/23 length then maybe chopping my 19 to a 26 grip. I would like to hear the good or bad from people who have shot and carried one. Thanks in advance.

Why? I'm not a Glock person so I may be misunderstanding the reason, but if you already have a 19 why buy one just to chop it to a 19 size? And then chop your already owned 19 to a 26?

Just buy a 26 and be done with it.

I did a chop and grip reduction on my 17 several years ago. Full size ballistics, sight plane, reliability. Carries like a 19. The grip is the hardest to hide. Textured the grip so it handles better (to me). Most find it uncomfortable. I have very calloused hands. No traction so i like a coarser grip that locks in tight.

I have a 3" SP101 with nicely made wooden grip that I traced out my "contact patch" filled that in with epoxy and rolled it in black grit blasting media. Now that is a solid grip. Does wear my cover garment badly tough.

Never a problem with it. Boring, glock reliability.

The big reason for me and I for most people is you get the sight length of the bigger pistol, but the grip of the smaller one.

Going from the 26's sight radius to that of the 19 makes a bigger difference than going from the 19's sight radius to the 17's.

I like the 19's that are chopped to 26 length, I think they're a great size, but the 17 chopped to the 19 is rather pointless IMO. If the 19 fits your hand or conceals better than the 17, just use the 19. And IMO, if you're going to bother buying another gun for this whole venture, I'd say just get a 26. They all shoot about the same anyway.

But, it's your gun, so do what you want.

Cool. then you could get a 26 and chop it off horizontally even with the trigger guard. :D

Thanks for the clarification. Does the extra .6 of an inch in sight radius make that much of a difference? Seems pretty negligible.

I have come to learn through experience that the Gen3 and Gen4 Glock grip frames are NOT all dimensioned equally. Specifically, the mid-size (G19/23) and compact (G26/27/29/30) frames have about 1/8" *less* space between the bottom of the trigger guard and the centerline of the first finger groove than do their full sized bretheren.

I like the positive mechanical indexing that I get from the finger grooves of the Gen3/4, but only on the full size (G17/22/20/21/31) models. On the smaller models, I find that my second knuckle on my index finger takes quite a beating from the reduction in space at the top of the grip frame. I have tried adding a radius to the right underside trigger guard on the smaller models, and it helps but it is *not* a perfect solution. Alternatively, I could rasp off the finger groove bump thingees altogether on the smaller pistols, but I *like* the finger grooves as a general rule.

A G17 frame cut down at the bottom only to G19 length would be an ideal solution for me.

Didn't think of that, but I agree, the g17 frame is much more comfortable than the 19 for me.

I'm going to do a grip chop on a G22 when I get a police trade in too. I've got a G22 already, but I want to leave that one as is.

I'm going to reduce the grip to a G27 size, as I have a harder time concealing longer grips. I read one account of someone borrowing a subcompact and put the two pistols side by side and used the trigger group pin to line both up by having the same pin attaching the pistols, then tracing the smaller profile to know where to cut. Rob Pinkus has a vid on YouTube as well.

I definitely shoot a 34 >> 17 >> 19 >> 26. And the difference is immediately obvious between each one.

I know people say the 26 shoots as good as the 17. Even Hickok can hit a gong at 100 yards with the 27... But I bet he can hit it with a much higher percentage with a 22.

I'd definitely be game for chopping a 17 down to 19-size, just for the mag interchangeability. I had the 19 first, and I have a lot of mags. I wouldn't chop the 19, though. I'd rather buy a 26. I am not about to start stocking up on lil 10 rd mags, and I mostly shoot my 26 with 15 round magazines, anyway.

I think the 17 is more comfortable than the 19, too. This is partly because of where the hump starts and partly because of the shorter top finger groove. The top groove can be fixed by relieving the trigger guard. But the higher hump gives the G19/23 the "glockiest" grip angle of the bunch. When people complain about Glock grip angle, the G19 is the only one I can't completely 100% disagree. So a shortened G17/22 would be great to me.

I've carrried 17s,19s,and 26s over the last 15 years on a regular basis. There's little difference between concealing a 17 and a 19 and little between a 19 and a 26. I found people who shot a 19 very well found the short grip and sight radius of a 26 really hurt their marksmanship. The 19 is the best all around 9mm made IMO.

Chopping grips on a Glock seems like something to do just because it can be done IMO. It also hurts the resale value unless you happen to find someone who thinks its a good idea too.

Why chop two guns just to end up with (effectively) only one new gun? Buy a 17/22 and chop that to a 26/27 length. Keep your G19 as is. The extra barrel length on the "new" 26/27 isn't going to hurt anything.

You have now committed the Cardinal Sin of injecting a cogent, logical post into this thread. Be ashamed of yourself!

Because this thread has been so full of illogical posts?

My friends who have done the chop love it. I'm comfortable enough with my 19, but it is only a matter of time before I do the chop.

If you already well stocked with 19 mags, it makes even more sense.

I chopped my G23 for mag versatility and to keep the light rail. Its a 4-caliber gun (with the 22 conversion) and the last pistol I'd get rid of.

I was wondering when someone would post a pic. That's a great idea for a versatile gun too. You only post once every few years, but you make it count.
