I have big hands and the sig 226 fits them well. How much smaller is the grip on the 228? Will the 228 work for big hands? Wish I could find one to hold but they are hard to find here. :(

The grip is shortened a bit from the bottom (maybe a quarter to half an inch), but should be about the same size otherwise. If you can find a LGS with a 229, it should be the same size as a 228.

The 226/228 comparison is similar to the Glock 17/19. Essentially the same gun, just a bit shorter barrel and grip wise.

Thanks, my hands are big enough that the 228 might be the smallest gun that I can shoot well.

Any specific advantage or disadvantage of the 228 compared to the 229?

228 advantage: perfectly balanced, imho, and that of many other 228 fans. The 229 is a little top heavy (due to the slide material).
228 disadvantage: only made for the 9mm (again, because of the slide material). The 229 is made to handle the .40 S&W, and .357 Sig, in addition to the 9 mm.
