I'm looking for somewhere to hunt chucks in Central NC, in or around Guilford, Forsyth, Davie, etc. counties. Any ideas? I see them near the highway quite often, and figure there has to be a farmer somewhere with a field full who'd like them taken out. For the record, I'm a dumb hillbilly and I actually eat the darn things, so they won't be wasted. :D

I'm not a farmer (wish i was but you have to have land in your family or you just can't afford to get started) but if you look toward high point there's a crap load of land that way that people will likely let you use. Sort of like you i see them on the side of the road CONSTANTLY. I think your best bet is to find some one with horses (enough to call it a business, not a hobby) who is worried about the holes breaking horse forelimbs. I would suggest the outlying archdale and trinity areas because there is loads of land out that way so there are bound to be stables and breeders. The problem will be convincing them that it is worth the noise, you will most likely need some one with enough land to close off that section of their pastures until the "problem" is eliminated. Good luck. I've never even seen one anywhere but on the side of the road (or standing in the middle of the road daring you to hit it) but I have had horses in the past (when i was a kid) and know that their holes can potentially be devistating.

I'm from more east of you guys i'm sure but I'm with you, i see a lot on the road up in that area. Its kinda of surprising because there really isnt a huge number of ground hogs in NC at all. If you can get into them though, its a blast. I hunted chucks in a town called North Java, NY. The fields were full of them. We were killing 20 in an afternoon pretty quickly. I just dont think that the numbers will support that kind of fun here. Good luck tho.

I'm not sure how it is over there, but here (Cleveland Co. NC) if you knock on just about any farmers door and offer to dispose of their vermin (groundhogs, coyotes, ect..) they will gladly let you.
