NRA, College Republicans support right to carry guns
by Chuck McShane
UT B&P Editor
February 26, 2004

Jamie Duncan and Aaron Von Gilder sat in front of the Belk Tower last Thursday afternoon passing out flyers and telling anyone who would listen about the Second Amendment.
The two were there as part of the first annual UNC Charlotte “Don’t Be A Victim Week,†a joint-effort of the UNCC College Republicans and the campus chapter of the National Rifle Association.

“[Don’t Be a Victim Week] was the brain child of the NRA, but executives from the College Republicans and the NRA helped with the program,†said Duncan, vice-chair of the College Republicans.

Members of both groups set up several cardboard dummies around the Belk Tower courtyard. Each dummy represented someone who prevented a crime by using a gun in defense of themselves or others. Posted on each dummy was the story of the crime the person prevented.

Duncan said there were numerous examples of crimes that had been prevented by people using their Second Amendment right to arm themselves.

“There’s the story of a woman stopping a serial rapist using a gun,†said Duncan. “Then there’s the example of a few guys at the Appalachian Law School who saw a crazy gunman in one of the buildings who went out to their cars and got their guns and stopped him.

“We’re focusing on law-abiding citizens who should know that they can protect themselves. We’re not at all suggesting that anybody and everybody should get a gun, but we know that people might misconstrue it that way,†said Duncan.

In addition, a representative from each group sat at a table passing out free movie passes and NRA literature including a fact sheet drawing attention to some of the recently passed gun legislation that the NRA considers draconian or unconstitutional.

“The fact sheet just shows some of the nonsense they come up with,†said Von Gilder. “We just want to make people aware of some of the civil liberties that are being taken away.â€

The two groups also handed out applications for permits to carry concealed weapons and very small water guns. With the Second Amendment tied to them.

“The administration was very supportive with everything,†said Duncan. “The only thing that they were concerned with was the guns. At first they weren’t going to let us do it, but then they decided we could, but that they [the guns] had to be clearly unrealistic.†The groups also brought local television personality Dan Starks to campus to give a speech on self-defense and how to arm yourself.

The UNCC chapter of the NRA started off last semester, and according to Von Gilder, is still a pretty small group.

“Right now we’re just trying to make people aware that we’re here,†said Von Gilder. “Eventually we’d like to get a rifle tea together that can compete with Carolina and other schools around the state.â€
