I posted this for another forum, but since there are a lot of people interested in the 1911 platform here too,I figure I share this with you guys also. There are a few semi-custom 1911s that come from the manufacturer really tight. The bushing can be really tight, requiring a bushing wrench to disassemble. It took me a while to figure it out too since I used to field strip by turning the bushing and taking out the plug and spring. Since the Bushing is VERY tight on new Les Baer 1911s, I had difficulty getting the bushing wrench to depress the recoil plug while turning the bushing.

So, here's another method.

(Pardon the pictures, I used one hand on the gun, the other hand taking the pictures :D )

Step 1: Make sure the gun is unloaded. Double check the chamber and confirm.

Step 2: Line up the slidestop notch with the slidestop

Step 3: Push the slide stop out

Step 4: Take the slide off the frame. Take caution, the spring is under tension and can shoot out along with the recoil rod! Use your thumb to hold the recoil rod in place when taking the slide off

The slide is now off the frame. Remove the recoil plug. Use the bushing wrench to take the bushing off the frame. The barrel can now come out.

Assembly process is reverse.

Step 1: Assemble the barrel and bushing. The recoil plug, spring and short rod will now need to be held into tension just as it was when the slide was disassembled from the frame. Use your thumb to hold tension while setting the slide onto the frame

Step 2: Aligh the barrel lug hole to the slidestop hole

Step 3: Insert the slidestop into the slidestop hole and barrel lug. The slidestop notch needs to match the slidestop. Push up and in against the plunger for the slidestop to be entered into the frame.

Optional: To avoid creating a "idiot mark" on the frame, you can use a business card or playing card under the slide stop when inserting the slide stop.

Step 4: Release slide. Your gun is now fully assembled.

Hope this helps. :)
