I want to get my girlfriend a Kahr PM9 for her birthday. Is that a straw purchase? What is the correct, legal way to transfer ownership of a handgun in Ohio? Would it be easier to just give her the money and just have her purchase the thing herself?

Thanks,
R

it's perfectly legal from the Federal side.

So long as the girlfriend is also an Ohio resident, is 21+ years of age (Ohio state law requirement), and not otherwise prohibited from possessing a firearm. As an added note: A gift is never a straw purchase, it says so right on the form 4473.

What is the correct, legal way to transfer ownership of a handgun in Ohio?

Hand her the gun.

Extension of Original Post Question

What if I am in Wisconsin and she is currently living in Arizona because of work? Would the best way to give her her new pistol be to simply ship it to her (following all regulations of course) or would an FFL transfer be necessary?

I know with some states you can ship it directly but with others you need to do FFL transfers, so only reply if you know for between WI and AZ. Or if you know where I can find this out myself let me know as well where.

Thank You :)

There are no states where you can ship guns directly to a person in another state. All interstate transfers between unlicensed individuals must go through an FFL.

You can ship guns intrastate w/o the services of an FFL, depending upon your state laws.

Thanks for the thread.

I recently bought a Buckmark for my signicant other, largely so I could have mine back and justify more BM extras :D (edit: because I love her dearly, and am overjoyed with her newfound enthusiasm for shooting). I'd told her it was hers in spirit but mine legally due to my ignorance of the law. It's nice to know she can legally call it hers.
