David, two bills have been filed in the House, HB123 deals with "Stand Your Ground" and HB97 deals with concealed weapons and prohibition of having a CW in government sposnored public land and events. Both are sponsored by Democrats and right now do not have a Senate sponsor, but they will eventually be filed in the Senate.

We have to shut this down. The key issue is "Overt Act." That will cause all kinds of litigation over what qualifies as an "Overt Act." If someone breaks into your house at three in the morning and you shoot them in reaction, you won't have immunity under SYG. Because the party hadn't had a chance to commit an Overt Act. Anybody who breaks into my house will always have committed an Overt Act, there is a decorational sword that hangs near the front door that anyone could just grab and anyone who would break into my house would certainly grab that sword upon breaking in.

I'll take my chances with the jury when they break in and I am simply defending my wife and two small children. If they come up the stairs, it's over. You can steal anything you want downstairs, once you place one foot one one step, all bets are off.

Stand Your Ground extends the Castle Doctrine outside your house. Modification to stand your ground does not effect Castle Doctrine so shooting an intruder in your home would never be an issue.

Honestly, SYG as its written needs to be cleaned up, there's too much ambiguity in the current legislation. However, this bill IS not the cleaning up that's needed, it's a knee jerk reaction to some high profile events.

Hang onto it FL, call your reps. In IA you have to retreat unless it would cause you more harm and the threat to life must be in IMMEDIATE, not imminent danger. Our laws blow, so do what you can to hang onto yours.
