Gun Buy-back? What a waste...

If anyone knows of gun buy backs in your area then start posting them. I will be looking out for them in PA from here on out....Think of how many rare, antique, collectible guns get trashed during these events.Though I'm sure many are garbage saturday night specials....

Now most of the shady guys holding handguns won't get my money as they won't be able to un-register what isn't theirs, but the 18 year old college kid with a Savage 99 that was his paps will.

I look at these things and they get a gift card for 50 to 100 dollars at the grocery market, I think 150.00 in cold hard cash may get you that Pre-64 model 70 you've always wanted.

So what I ask is when you hear of these buy-backs post them, heck I think most people would be a fool not to make a legal transaction on an awesome firearm that would otherwise be destroyed or picked through by the PD.

What do you guys think?

There's one in Chesapeake, VA coming up. I have actually recommended this be a sticky a few months ago but not many people showed interest.

I'm going to the buyback with cash. I'll let you all know how it goes.

What is the turn-in "reward" at the VA buyback? You could stand to make some profit by buying cheap handguns in bulk and then turning them in.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. - If you have a handgun you'd like to get rid of, the Chesapeake Police Department is interested in it.

The department is holding a Gun Buy Back on Saturday, December 6, 2008 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

If you turn in your gun at one of two locations that day, you will receive a 100 dollar gift card for each gun. The gun must be in working order.

Put the unloaded hangun in a clear plastic bag. Each gun must be in its own container.

The department will accept rifles, shotguns and ammunition, but you will not receive any compensation for it.

The goal of the program is to reduce violent crime by launching a proactive campaign to take guns off the street, by encouraging gun owners to voluntarily turn in their weapons.

Before what? The government takes them.

If you go to your gunshop and ask them to order you 15 Saturday night specials/ other "junk" guns @ ~$65 each, you could make $525 in profit (assuming there is no limit on how many cards you can receive).

You can then go out and get a GLOCK, a 3rd gen Smith, a decent 1911, a CZ, or any one of a number of different guns essentially free. You stimulate the economy by purchasing American weapons, and you come out financially ahead. God bless America.

If the Gun Show Loophole ever goes into effect said purchases will no longer be legal.

I think the idea is - if these are people who don't want these guns anymore - they might be tempted to just sell 'em to whoever, without really being aware of, or bothering to investigate the proper legal protocol.

I don't think anyone has any imagination that serious enthusiasts (ya know, people on here, people who actually KNOW guns) are going to turn stuff in there, nor are criminals going to suddenly realize the error of their ways for $100 gift card. Somebody who inherited old uncle chuck's revolver and has had it sitting in the back of a closet and doesn't know what to do with it - well, there ya go.

The harm comes when the government uses tax dollars to buy these guns and then just destroys them. If they were to get auctioned off through legal channels after the buy back then more power to them, but wasting taxpayers' money to destroy them is wrong in every sense of the word.

Gun buy back

I don't like gun buy backs for 3 reasons.
1. The seller could probably get more as a consignment sale unless it's a junker.
2. It takes valuable antiques away from collector markets.
3. It encourages petty thieves to rip off owners to sell your guns no questions asked.

I was at one in NY where the person 2 ahead of me in line pulled a very nice Colt SSA with US marking out of a bag and handed it in for $200.

I literally wanted to cry.

That along with the M-1 Carbine, Garand, and some old SxS and O/U shotguns almost ruined my day. They were also not bothering to remove some nice scopes. There was also a pile of cases, hard and soft.

The $600 I made for 3 pretty worthless guns though helped alleviate the pain.

I sold two total garbage "suicide special" break-top beaters for $75 each in a Cocoa, FL buyback in the '90s.

What I saw being turned in was a bunch of rusty single-shot .22s, single barrel shotguns and other stuff that would never be used in an assault.

i wouldnt call it a waste. i have an old marlin 60. its better days have come and gone. i have already spent too much money on it. Its come down to it would make a good wall hanger or spend as much to get a new one to get this one firing again. so im looing for one of these gun buy backs. and what am i going to do. straight after i leave the gun buy back im going to buy another gun.

Some people tend to consider firearms almost Holy. They are not. If someone wants to sell off a piece of their personal property, I don't care.

I seriously doubt many people turn in anything of value. Most people know that guns are worth more than $50, especially old ones.

Why not just stay out of other people's business?

They are a total waste. If people don't want those guns then they should put them back into the market instead of taking $100 from the local government and paying for them to destroy them.

I was BSing with some people at a local gun shop the other day and the one interesting bit of info was that someone brought in an old Luger with papers and in mint condition. The officers took her aside and even told her that this was NO PLACE for a gun like that and strongly suggested she take it to a gun shop or gun show to sell it. Naturally the old lady did the smart thing and handed it in for 100 dollars.

Too bad gun buybacks aren't popular around here. I have 3 old, rusty, broken .22cal rifles in the back of my closet. I'd love to get a c-note or two for each of them. I'd take the money and head straight to Jims Firearms here in Baton Rouge and get something nice for myself.
