I have been advised that carb cleaner will dissolve Loctite over time. Is there something else that you can suggest. I don't care about the specific chemical but I like the mechanical action that the spray provides. I generally use an oil/cleaner and tootbrush followed by a blasting with Gun Scrubber or similar spray and finish up with a light coating of oil. Any suggestions? Does anyone know if the "synthetic safe" stuff would dissolve the Loctite?

Thanks

Most solvents will slowly attack Loctite.
It takes a long time though since there is not much space for the solvent to react with, the space between the threads is filled with cured Loctite.

If it worked very well it would be used instead of heat.

100, 500 and 1000 hour test chart of various solvents over time in this datasheet
http://65.213.72.112/tds5/docs/242-EN.PDF

It turns out the worst is 50/50 water/glycol and it only decreased the strength to 70 percent in 1000 hours.
This is for 242 blue loctite, others may be different

mrmeval,

Excellent information. There are some aerosol alchohol products available and should do well. Thanks you for your help.

It's nothing to even worry about.

About any aerosol solvent carb cleaner / gun scrubber, etc, I have used will be completely evaporated within minutes after application. Even sooner if you blow it off with an air hose.
