I had a dream last night that I needed to use my gun in self defense, and no matter how hard I pulled the trigger, it would not fire.

What does that mean?
Performance anxiety?
Lack of will to do what has to be done?

Where's Dr Phil when you need him?

Was it a Hi-Power? Maybe it was on half-cock? The interpretation, then, would be don't go off half-cocked.

I think we covered this topic a litle while ago. I get the same dream... all the time. I need to shoot someone, and the trigger pull is exceedingly heavy... like I am trying to pull the trigger with the safety engaged. Maybe it's the good Lord telling me to buy a GLOCK.

Also, I occasionally get the dream where I keep shooting and the guy won't go down, no matter how many times I shoot him. My last dream ended with me shooting this hulking thug 5 times, and right before I woke up, he was in my face, and I was apologizing for shooting him.

Maybe I need to but a GLOCK .45ACP and the dreams will go away. Or an XD.

I've had this dream numerous times too.

It never happens when I have my AK in the dream though - seriously!

I think it represents some lingering fear that the weapon you depend on is less than 100% reliable.

I really don't see what no one has figured this on out yet? It means you need to buy another gun.

It is you subconscious self telling you it is unsatisfied with the current armaments you have.

Your subconscious was trying to "pull the trigger" as in "pull the trigger on another purchase." But the gun would not fire or "make the purchase". In your dream YOU are the gun which “will not fire” or “buy” what your subconscious is telling it too.

Now, was the bad guy in this dream male or female? Since you didn't mention, I will assume you don't know for sure. So it could have been either Hillary of Edwards coming for your guns. So my professional* assessment is that your subconscious was not only telling you to buy a new gun, but one that may be banned in the near future.

I hope that helped?

*I don't have a BS in psychology, but I do tend to BS to a great degree.

Well, if dreams can be interpreted as your fears, then maybe it is just a manifestation of your fear that your carry gun isn't reliable. You better take it to the range and convince yourself it is working correctly. :)

I've had a similar dream a few months back. I keep a loaded 12 ga. in the corner of my bedroom, chamber empty and safety on as a default, but when i need it, i just pick it up, pump it and press the safety button and it's ready to go.

Anyway, i had a dream one night that there was an intruder in my apartment, and i needed the 12 ga. I picked it up, pumped it, and headed out to face the threat, and i dont quite remember exactly, but even though i knew in my dream what to do with the gun, i couldn't do it. I either started fiddling with the safety, or maybe i just couldn't pump it, or whatever, i don't know. Anyhow, i couldn't bring the shotgun to service when i needed it.

I know in real life, once i grabbed the shotgun, it would be ready to fire in a second, but in my dream, it just didn't work that way. I thought about it the next morning and it frustrated me. The only thing i could think of was that sometimes i think about scenerio's in my head and worry that i might not be prepared enough. I think i worry too much that when the time comes, that i will be too nervous, or have a brain fart, or draw a blank when i need to arm myself and use my weapon. That's what it was for me, anyway.

Good to see I'm not the only one who has those dreams. I've had several "gun dreams" where I was in a situation that I really wanted to be able to shoot someone but wasn't able to. I'm usually running around looking for my gun, or I've got a stockpile of guns, but can't find the right ammo, or I'm shooting away with no results. I don't think I've ever killed anybody in a dream, and I'm fine with that. I think it means something, but not sure what.

I guess anybody that carries a gun spends a fair amount of time during the day considering scenarios where he might need it and what he would do. Maybe the subconcious just takes off from there when you go to sleep.

I remember closing my eyes to go to sleep after a day of fishing and I could totally see fish swimming in a stream and rising to take my fly. Pretty cool.

Actually, now that I think about it, I think I had those dreams before I started carrying, and that in fact is why I decided to get a permit, so I could always have my gun on me and not be in that situation.

That's fairly strange, since I get the same type of dreams. And my experience with pistols is fairly limited. I'm more used to rifles and shotguns that have light trigger pulls.

Its always like the trigger pull is something like 20 or 30 pounds or something ridiculous like that. Not sure why this is. In my dreams, the gun usually goes off, but it takes some work to pull the trigger all the way back.

I have never had one of these dreams, but it reminds of those dreams where you need to run or scream, but can't.

I think I've had that dream myself...

You squeeze and squeeze and squeeze the trigger, but it never, ever seems to go bang!
Hey, this sounds just like that first generation Taurus PT-92 that I used to own.

+1.

For thousands of years, people all around the world have tried to interpret dreams. Google “Dream interpretation” and you will see the wide variety of dream theories, etc, people have invented. All of them make sense, at least sort of, but none have been proven. You can pick any one you want, but I’m going with the rehearsal theory. Lots of people dream they are trying to do something important (catch a plane, shoot an attacker, plug a burst pipe, run to save someone, etc) and they can’t, or there are a series of obstructions that keep being placed in their way. This is your subconscious rehearsing you for the worse case scenario. If you go through a bad situation in your dreams several times, without loosing your cool and with continuing to work at solving the problem, you are more likely to successfully pull it off if it ever happens in real life.

I'm no psychoanalyst, but the interpretation is easy.

1. You are a normal red blooded American .
2. You are tactically minded and concerned about safety.
3. You value human life and its preciousness and wish to protect it.
4. Occasionally we all feel anxiety over adequate protection of ourselves and our loved ones.
Conclusion and diagnosis: Normal dream.
Prescription: Buy more guns.

I had that same recurring nightmare when I was a rookie cop; confided to a veteran sergeant, who laughed and said a lot of cops had that nightmare. He figured it had to do with a realization (borne out by range time with a large number of fellow officers and some OLD service sidearms) that anything mechanical can fail; even a "six-for-sure" revolver. Couple that with official legal training re: "Murphy's Law," and voila! Instant nightmare!

Sarge suggested I invest in a quality, fixed-blade knife and pack it "just in case" (he musta been getting senile; plumb forgot that wasn't sanctioned by the department . . .).

I purchased a Gerber MkI, and wore it on duty, upside down, on a cord around my neck, concealed underneath my uniform shirt. Yes, it's a bit large for use as a neck knife, but worked quite well under the heavy uniform shirt. Never really worried about a fixed-blade knife malfunctioning; no more nightmares. Sarge sure was smart.

This is similar to the dream where you trying to throw a punch at some BG but you cant because your punches feel as if you were trying to punch through molasses. You feel slow and week and if you do throw a punch it has no effect and it just demoralizes you that you cant seem to knock this BG down. It gets you so upset and frustrated that you start to second guess yourself and find yourself posting questions on various forums...lol:neener:

Yes, i have had those dreams. The running real slow dream, weak sissy punches, 200lb trigger, the yell that no one can hear dream.....i think i have had them all....no idea what they mean but they are frustrating.
maybe some kind of 'performance anxiety'...hmmmmm

I had the 200lb trigger every time there was a gun in my dreams. What worked for me was shooting more often. After going through a few hundred rounds over the next couple weeks my gun started working like normal in the dreams.
Of course there was also the problem of the rounds not dropping the BG, or he drops, I leave the room and when I come back the body isn't there, but I don't know how you'd train for that :uhoh:

This makes me so happy I though I was just crazy having these pull the trigger and the gun doesn't go off dreams so yes I do have these dreams all the time
